Vivo started teasing the Vivo X Fold 5 foldable phone’s launch in China. Now, Vivo’s Product Manager Han Boxiao has confirmed that the device has improved durability thanks to better cold resistance and triple-layer protection, adding value to the features in the previous model.

Vivo X Fold 5 Brings IPX9 Water Resistance, Extreme Cold Protection, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and Advanced Battery
Boxiao emphasized that the Vivo X Fold 5 represents a major advancement in foldable phone toughness. It will also be the first large or small foldable in the world to have IPX9 water resistance, IP5X dust resistance, and an extra layer of cold protection. Vivo says it ran the device through tests in -20°C and everything works fine even after long exposure. The Vivo X Fold 5 is also the world’s first device with second-generation semi-solid battery technology.
This upgrade extends the solid-state electrolyte to both the positive and negative electrodes, enabling the battery to function at temperatures as low as -30°C—an improvement over the battery used in the X Fold 3. For ingress protection, the X Fold 5 sets a new benchmark with IP5X dust resistance and IPX8 water resistance, able to endure water pressure at depths up to 3 meters. It also reportedly withstands high-pressure hot water sprays, pushing it toward an IPX9 rating—the first for any foldable phone.
Regarding specs, the Vivo X Fold 5 is expected to feature a 6.53-inch LTPO outer screen and a large 8.03-inch AMOLED internal display, both supporting a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Powering the phone may be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, paired with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The device is likely to feature a 6,000mAh battery with 90W wired fast charging and 30W wireless charging. Photography-wise, it could include two 32MP front cameras—one for each screen—and a Zeiss-co-engineered triple rear camera setup with a 50MP main sensor, an ultra-wide lens, and a periscope zoom offering 3x optical zoom.
