Viacom18 has emerged as the clear winner in the recent BCCI media rights auction, bagging both TV and digital rights for bilateral cricket matches in India for the next five years. This landmark deal has left Disney Star and Sony Sports Network trailing in its wake.

Let’s have a look into the details of this game-changing development: Viacom18 Scores Big – BCCI Media Rights Auction

The Eye-Popping Deal

Viacom18 is set to pay a staggering Rs 67.8 Crore for each match over the next five years, making it one of the most lucrative media rights deals in cricket history. This substantial investment showcases Viacom18’s commitment to Indian cricket.

Extensive Broadcast Portfolio

Viacom18’s acquisition encompasses an impressive array of events, including India’s home matches, IPL (digital), WIPL, Olympics 2024, SA home matches 2024, T10 League, Road Safety World Series, SA20, NBA, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue1, and the Diamond League. This comprehensive portfolio cements Viacom18’s position as a powerhouse in sports broadcasting.

Disney Star’s Retreat

Disney Star, the previous rights holder for BCCI matches, has scaled back its operations in India after incurring substantial losses. Consequently, Viacom18 seized the opportunity to become the new home of Indian cricket.

Sony’s Merger with Zee

Sony, once a major player in cricket broadcasting, joined forces with Zee during this bidding process. However, despite high expectations, they were unable to secure the rights. Sony has not held a major cricket property since relinquishing the IPL rights in 2017.

The Future of Indian Cricket

The new media rights cycle spans five years, commencing with the India vs. Australia series in September. BCCI has committed to hosting a minimum of 88 home games during this period, with the potential for this number to increase to 102.

Strategic Bidding

Experts predict that the BCCI media rights auction wasn’t marked by aggressive bidding based on ego but rather on sound business logic. This signifies the changing landscape of cricket broadcasting in India.
