Major Films Stealing the Spotlight

“The Smashing Machine” – Dwayne Johnson’s Venice Debut

Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” from A24, features Dwayne Johnson as two-time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn. This biographical drama marks Johnson’s first appearance at the Venice Film Festival, showcasing his dramatic acting range beyond blockbuster action films.

The film explores the complex world of mixed martial arts through the lens of one of its most troubled champions, promising an intimate portrayal of athletic glory and personal struggle.

“After the Hunt” – Julia Roberts Returns to Thrillers

Luca Guadagnino’s #MeToo-inspired thriller “After the Hunt,” for Amazon MGM Studios, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri, will premiere out of competition. This marks Roberts’ Venice debut and her return to the thriller genre after years of focusing on other projects.

The film tackles contemporary social issues while maintaining Guadagnino’s signature cinematic style, making it one of the most anticipated premieres of the festival.

Director Spotlight: Visionary Filmmakers

Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein”

Guillermo del Toro’s dark reimagining of “Frankenstein,” featuring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth, is a Netflix production that promises to bring fresh perspective to the classic monster tale. Del Toro’s gothic sensibilities and visual mastery make this adaptation highly anticipated among horror and literary enthusiasts.

Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos Reunion

The successful collaboration between Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos continues with their latest project, building on their previous acclaimed works together. This partnership has consistently delivered thought-provoking cinema that challenges conventional storytelling.

Festival Competition and Awards Implications

After getting upstaged by Cannes at this year’s Oscars — when Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora” took best picture over Brady Corbet’s Lido champ “The Brutalist” — Venice has come roaring back. The festival’s strategic programming aims to reclaim its position as a major awards season launchpad.

Kaouther Ben Hania, Jim Jarmusch, Leonardo Di Costanzo and actor/filmmakers Benny Safdie, Shu Qi and Valerie Donzelli all make their Venice Competition debuts, bringing fresh voices to the prestigious competition lineup.

Additional Star Power

Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Emma Stone, Dwayne Johnson, Adam Sandler and Idris Elba are just some of the celebrities headlining films at this year’s Venice International Film Festival. This impressive roster demonstrates the festival’s continued ability to attract Hollywood’s biggest names.

The diverse cast of international stars ensures global appeal while maintaining the festival’s reputation for artistic excellence.

New Festival Sections

Barbera also unveiled two new sections as part of the official selection. Spotlight replaces the Horizons Extra strand, indicating the festival’s evolution and commitment to showcasing diverse cinematic voices.

These structural changes reflect the festival’s adaptation to contemporary cinema trends while preserving its core artistic mission.

What This Means for Awards Season

With powerhouse films and A-list talent converging on the Lido, Venice 2025 positions itself as a crucial stop for Oscar hopefuls. The festival’s strategic programming combines commercial appeal with artistic merit, creating the perfect storm for awards season success.

The combination of established directors working with major stars, alongside emerging voices in competition, suggests this year’s festival could significantly influence the upcoming awards race.

Why Venice Matters More Than Ever

As streaming platforms and traditional studios compete for prestige, Venice offers the perfect platform for launching awards campaigns. The festival’s European prestige combined with Hollywood star power creates an ideal environment for films seeking critical acclaim and commercial success.
