Raphael Varane is expected to fly to Manchester today to complete his transfer to the red side of the city.
The player will have to quarantine for a brief period before appearing for his medical assessment. Once he clears the examination, he will sign the dotted line and will be officially unveiled as a Manchester United player. The Premier League club have already confirmed the transfer, stating that they have reached an agreement in principle.
Real Madrid have received a fee worth €40-50 million for their centre-back and decided to cash in on him this summer rather than risk losing him for free next year. Varane only had one year remaining on his contract with Madrid and decided that it was time to try something new after spending a decade at the Spanish capital and winning everything there is to win in club football.
Manchester United have agreed on a four-year deal with the player, and have the option to extend it for another year till June 2026. With the departure of Varane, Real Madrid have lost both their first team starting centre-backs from last season. Sergio Ramos joined PSG earlier in the transfer window, and Varane is now joining Manchester United.
Carlo Ancelotti will have to choose between Nacho, David Alaba, Eder Militao and Jesus Vallejo as the centre-backs at Real Madrid. He could also turn to the prospects in the academy to make up the numbers in central defense.
