VAR in the Premier League is set for a big change, with AI now being used to make semi-automated offside decisions. The technology has been used at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, and is also seen in the Champions League.
Special cameras and technology is being installed in all Premier League stadiums ahead of the new season. This will allow for the creation of 3D models of the ball and players when making offside calls, allowing the correct decisions to be made swiftly.

Since its introduction five years ago, VAR has perhaps been the most controversial aspect of the game in the Premier League. Offside calls have been made by drawing lines across a camera shot, while handball calls have divided fans drastically.
The new six-point plan of implementation from the Premier League officials suggests that on-field referees will be encouraged to stick to their decisions and maintain a level of subjectivity. Moreover, players and coaches are also being warned about speaking out against VAR.
The authorities feel it will undermine the confidence in the technology among fans, especially when players and managers lead the charge.
