Upcoming Intel Alder Lake-S Core i9-12900K Qualification Sample spotted with up to 5.3 GHz boost clocks

The Blue team did face a lot of humiliation with its Rocket Lake-S desktop CPUs which was a nightmare because of the extreme use of the 14nm process. It did not end well for Intel as everyone seems to take these 11th Gen CPUs for granted and opt for AMD instead, thanks to its amazing performance and efficiency.

Now that the stock issues of Ryzen 5000 processors are over, people are relentlessly buying them even though in the market, we only have four of these available. So, Intel’s next 10nm based desktop processors are really very important to hold its falling reputation in desktop space.

Though we know these hybrid architecture based Alder Lake-S processors are in their sampling stage, these qualification samples are already available for a few weeks. So, now we have a benchmark leak of the upcoming flagship CPU or the Core i9-12900K.

Intel calls the Alder Lake a 'Breakthrough CPU Architecture’

So, as per a post on NGA.cn forums, the CPU seems to feature 8 big (high-performance) and 8 small (high-efficiency) while having a base clock speed of 3.9 GHz and a boost up to 5.3 GHz. Though it is near to the rumoured 5.5 GHz did cross the 5.0 GHz, which on a 10nm SuperFin process could be game-changing for Intel.

Also, bear in mind this is a sample CPU and not a fine-tuned one; still, the benchmark results look good on paper; these are the leaked Cinebench R20 multi-core test results:

  • Core i9-12900K (ES2): 9300+
  • Core i9-12900K (QS calculated): 11300+
  • Core i7-12700K (QS?): 9500+
  • Core i5-12600K (QS?): 7400+

So, there is a definite improvement we see in the performance of the Qualification Sample and the Engineering Sample 2. In Cinebench R20, the so-called Core i9-12900K manages to outperform AMD’s 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X processor, which in our review scored 9347 points while everywhere having an average of 10400 points.

This means Intel is finally ready with its true Core i9 successor; however, this score was calculated based on a higher turbo clock when compared to 9300 points scored by the 12900K engineering sample. The leaker (YuuKi_AnS) did also share early information on all known mobile Alder Lake Engineering Samples (ES) bugs.

The good performance of these hybrid CPUs can only be expected on the latest Windows 11. However, it will be interesting to see the final performance of these Alder Lake-S desktop CPUs as they will bring first-of-a-kind features like DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen5.
