Why UFS 5.0 Is a Bigger Jump Than You’d Think
Kioxia’s UFS 5.0 samples utilise MIPI M-PHY 6.0 for the physical layer alongside an in-house controller and 8th-generation BiCS FLASH 3D memory with CBA (CMOS directly Bonded to Array) technology to boost power efficiency, performance, and density — available in 512GB and 1TB capacities.
UFS 5.0 could support up to 10.8GB/s of theoretical bandwidth — roughly twice that of UFS 4.0 — enabling faster large file transfers, more stable 4K and 8K video recording, and significantly improved on-device AI performance.

Crucially, UFS 5.0 is designed to be backward-compatible with UFS 4.x hardware, which should make adoption easier for manufacturers — and it’s been optimised specifically to consume less power despite the dramatically higher speeds. While JEDEC is still finalising the UFS 5.0 standard, evaluation samples are already being sent out for interoperability testing — and phones using the tech are not expected to arrive until late 2026 or early 2027.
