Manchester City have won the 2023 UEFA Super Cup, defeating Europa League winners Sevilla 5-4 on penalties. The two teams could not be separated after 90 minutes of open play, with the scores level at 1-1.
Pep Guardiola was without his trusted midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, with the Belgian sidelined for the next 3-4 months. In his absence, Cole Palmer stepped up to play an important role in the match. The City youngster put up a special display during the Community Shield as well, and was the difference maker in the UEFA Super Cup match as well.Â

The Champions League winners went behind early on in Athens, with Youssef En-Nesyri taking the lead for his side. The striker headed a brilliant cross from Marcos Acuna following a counter attack to make it 1-0 25 minutes into the game.Â
Sevilla were unable to keep up in the second half, with Palmer finding the back of the net with his head. Rodri played in a cross from the left flank and found the youngster who called for it and beat Bono from inside the box to equalise.
City were able to muster up a remarkable wave of attacks in the second half, but Sevilla defended resolutely to send the game to penalties.
Nemanja Gudelj missed the only penalty for Sevila, as his effort hit the bar and allowed the Champions League winners to claim the UEFA Super Cup as well.
