The Coronavirus pandemic has brought the whole world into a standstill. All the European Leagues have been suspended and the clubs have gone into quarantine.

UEFA have also moved the European Championships to 2021 to give all the leagues enough time to complete their season. Initially, UEFA wanted the leagues to end this season by June. But as it now seems, it will take a long time to restart this season.

All the leagues hope to restart the 2019-20 season by April or May. But the COVID-19 outbreak is still going strong, so there’s no definite return date. UEFA’s president has suggested this season would have to be considered as null and void if they fail to restart by the end of June.

Aleksander Ceferin told Italian publication La Repubblica: “If we don’t succeed in restarting, the season will probably be lost. There is a plan A, B and C. The three options are to start again in mid-May, in June or at the end of June.”

“There is also the possibility of starting again at the beginning of the next [season], starting the following one later. We’re in touch with the leagues, the clubs, there is a working group and we’ll see what solution is best for all. We have to wait, like any other sector.”

He further added on whether the games will be played behind closed doors: “It’s difficult to imagine all the games behind closed doors, but right now we don’t even know if we will resume, with or without fans.”

“If there are no other alternatives, it would still be better to conclude the leagues. I can say that I’m not thinking about staging the European cup finals behind closed doors.”

“In this dramatic moment, the most important thing is health, and to get out of this crisis. The interruption of football symbolises that Europe and the world have stopped. European football is strongly united.”
