Tyler Perry is trading his usual steamy thrillers for something more grounded this fall. Doing Life, his newest Netflix drama, tells the story of two people fighting to rebuild — and finding an unlikely bond along the way.

What’s the Plot?

The film follows Anika, a single mother battling to keep her life together, and a reformed ex-convict discovering untapped talents of his own. As their paths cross, the two form an unexpected connection that gives them both a shot at a second chance. It’s a more grounded, character-driven story than some of Perry’s recent output, leaning into urban drama and quiet romance rather than high-stakes thrills.

Who’s in the Cast?

Leading the film is Naomi Baker (All American: Homecoming) as Anika, opposite Jay Reeves, who previously worked with Perry on The Six Triple Eight, playing the reformed ex-con at the heart of the story.

The supporting cast brings together a strong mix of familiar faces:

Tamberla Perry (Brilliant Minds) as Cathy
Karen Obilom (Doom Patrol) as Trina
Jasmine Sargent (Dynasty) as Lisa
Danielle Moné Truitt (Law & Order: Organized Crime) as Denise
Cornell Young IV as Donovan — also known for his upcoming role in Netflix’s A Different World sequel series

Rounding out the ensemble are Mike Massa, Joyce Glenn, Justin James Boykin, Tracey Stephens, Andre Hall, and Ahmad Ghafouri in supporting roles.

Part of a Bigger Perry Slate

Doing Life arrives as part of an incredibly busy stretch for Tyler Perry on Netflix. This year alone he’s delivered Joe’s College Road Trip, a new installment of Beauty in Black, and Why Did I Get Married Again?, set for a September release. Given the emotional weight of last year’s Straw, expectations are high that Doing Life could land with similarly strong resonance among audiences.

Perry’s continued output reflects his position as one of the most prolific storytellers in American cinema, consistently centering stories about resilience, faith, and second chances within Black communities.
