Turtle Rock Studios may be working on Back 4 Blood 2, based on a recent rumor from MP1st. The speculation originated from a project called “Gobi 2” that was listed on actor Jesse Hutch’s resume, which he later updated to show Gears of War 4 motion capture work for JD Fenix. The first Back 4 Blood was known internally as “Gobi,” named after a bearded dragon that had been the studio’s mascot and who has unfortunately since died.

Furthermore, a site was also registered that same year for Back 4 Blood 2, which only added to rumors of a sequel. In February of 2023, Turtle Rock Studios stated that they were done with Back 4 Blood. The game had brief post-launch support of little more than a year that most would consider satisfactory if it was able to meet or exceed sales targets, therefore heightening the chances of a sequel.

Given the success of the original and its place, as a spiritual successor to the fondly-remembered Left 4 Dead franchise, it’s hard for many fans not to hope that Back 4 Blood 2 is one day in our future. Back 4 Blood, released on October 12, 2021, took a more modern approach to the zombie co-op genre. The unique progression system and heavy emphasis on replayability was a first for the game.

The game received an 8 out of 10 from reviewers, praising the “brilliant” map design, a wide variety of missions to tackle, and using cards that can be easily mixed and matched to offer players customization that doesn’t bog things down. However, the game received mixed reviews from solo players, as it is heavily focused on teamwork, making it less enjoyable for those who prefer to play alone. With strong gameplay mechanics and a loyal fanbase, Back 4 Blood 2 seems like a natural next step for Turtle Rock Studios, but official confirmation is still pending.
