Gujarat Titans Set for Ownership Change as Torrent Group Acquires Majority Stake

Indian business conglomerate Torrent Group is set to take over Gujarat Titans, acquiring a 67% majority stake from CVC Capital Partners. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the deal is currently awaiting approval from the IPL governing council. If finalized, Torrent Group will officially become the new owners of Gujarat Titans from the 2025 IPL season, which kicks off on March 21.

While the financial valuation of the stake remains undisclosed, this acquisition marks a major development in Gujarat Titans’ short but impactful IPL journey.

CVC Capital Partners’ Eventful Tenure with Gujarat Titans

CVC Capital Partners had purchased Gujarat Titans in 2021 for INR 5625 crore (approximately USD 750 million). Under their ownership, Gujarat Titans made a stunning debut, clinching the IPL title in 2022, finishing as runners-up in 2023, and experiencing a dip in form in 2024, where they finished eighth.

Gujarat Titans have established their home base at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket venue with a seating capacity exceeding 100,000. The franchise’s rapid rise in IPL has made them one of the most followed teams in the league.

Torrent Group’s Longstanding Interest in Gujarat Titans

Torrent Group, headquartered in Ahmedabad, has shown consistent interest in Gujarat Titans and the IPL. In 2021, the company’s subsidiary, Torrent Sports Ventures Private Limited, was among the final nine bidders in the BCCI auction for two new franchises.

Torrent had placed competitive bids of INR 4653 crore for Ahmedabad and INR 4356 crore for Lucknow but eventually lost out to CVC Capital Partners and RPSG Group, respectively. In 2023, the group also made an unsuccessful bid for three cities in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Torrent Group’s Expansion into IPL with Gujarat Titans

Torrent Group, valued at approximately INR 41,000 crore, is one of India’s top multinational corporations, operating through its major subsidiaries, Torrent Power and Torrent Pharmaceuticals. This acquisition marks the group’s entry into sports investment, signaling a broader diversification strategy.

Jinal Mehta, son of Torrent Group’s chairman emeritus Sudhir Mehta, is expected to lead the group’s IPL venture. The acquisition of Gujarat Titans represents a strategic move to strengthen Torrent’s footprint in India’s booming sports industry.

Gujarat Titans’ Future Under New Ownership

Led by Indian star batter Shubman Gill, Gujarat Titans have built a strong squad featuring top international cricketers, including Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, England’s Jos Buttler, and India’s Mohammed Siraj. With new owners set to take over, Gujarat Titans will aim to rebuild and return to their championship-winning form.
