Green Day-Inspired Comedy Film “New Years Rev” in Development at Live Nation Productions

A new comedy film inspired by Green Day’s early years is officially in the works. Titled New Years Rev, the movie is being produced by Live Nation Productions and brings a fresh take on the classic coming-of-age journey.

The film follows three young friends who mistakenly believe their band is set to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles. With music, mischief, and a cross-country road trip filled with chaos, New Years Rev captures the reckless energy of youthful ambition and the raw spirit of a band chasing a dream.

A Story Inspired by Green Day’s Early Touring Days

The film’s official logline describes the story as “a rowdy and mischievous jaunt across the country,” inspired by Green Day’s own experiences of living out of a van during their early touring years. Directed and written by Lee Kirk, the movie explores the highs and lows of young musicians as they embark on a misadventure that’s as much about friendship as it is about music.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong reflected on the film’s theme, stating:

“Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of. But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.”

An Impressive Ensemble Cast

New Years Rev features a promising cast led by Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust. The supporting cast includes well-known faces such as Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, best known for their roles on The Office, alongside rising talents like Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo. With such a dynamic lineup, the film promises an engaging mix of comedy, heart, and rock ‘n’ roll spirit.

A Collaboration Between Music and Film Giants

The film is being produced by a powerhouse team, including Green Day’s own Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool. Additional producers include Tim Perell (Process), Stella Bulochnikov (Pat Solitano Productions), Ryan Kroft, and Michael Rapino (Live Nation Productions). Executive producer Jonathan Daniel is also onboard to bring this project to life.

Live Nation Productions, the film and television division of Live Nation Entertainment, is known for its successful music-related projects, including A Star Is Born, Moonage Daydream, and Love, Lizzo. The studio aims to continue its streak of delivering compelling music-based storytelling with New Years Rev.

Green Day’s Legacy Continues

As New Years Rev brings Green Day’s early struggles and triumphs to the screen, the legendary band remains as active as ever. They recently released their latest album, Saviors (2024), and are set to headline Coachella in April, proving that their influence on punk rock and youth culture is far from over.

Ryan Kroft, head of film and TV at Live Nation Productions, emphasized the significance of the movie, stating:

“With incredible guidance from Green Day, New Years Rev tells the story of young artists chasing a dream — long nights, endless miles, and the electrifying rush of the stage fueling their journey. Brought to life by an incredible cast, it’s a tribute to the magic of live music.”

With production already underway in Oklahoma, New Years Rev is shaping up to be a nostalgic yet fresh take on the relentless pursuit of musical dreams. Fans of Green Day and coming-of-age comedies alike can look forward to a thrilling and heartfelt ride when the film eventually hits theaters.
