Yes, the most misspelled footballer name belongs to Borussia Dortmund’s striker Erling Haaland, with an average of 318,300 incorrect global online searches per month. Common search variations for Erling Haaland include ‘Haland’ (156,000 monthly searches) and ‘Halland’ (127,000 monthly searches).
This is no surprise as the young Norwegian footballer has been the centre of attraction since his time at Borussia Dortmund. He has an explosive goalscoring record, making him one of the most frequently searched football player while also being the most misspelt footballer of the world in 2021.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Quite surprisingly, even the great Cristiano haven’t been spared his fans as people often make mistakes while searching his name on the internet with an average of 237,140 incorrect online searches a month.
Those searching for the Manchester United forward are most commonly misspelling his name as ‘Christiano Robaldo’ (101,000 monthly searches) and ‘Christiano Ronaldo’ (44,000 monthly searches).
Kylian Mbappe
Much likely, the young Kylian Mbappe is also on the list as well because people do end up searching more often than not while also making mistakes while doing so. He is the third on the list with an average of 182,400 inaccurate searches per month. The French star’s name is most commonly misspelt as ‘Mbapp’ (79,000 monthly searches) and ‘Mbape’ (62,000 monthly searches).
Neymar
Intrestingly, even the Brazilian star has not been spared by his fans across the globe as he sits fourth on the list. He gets as much as 147,400 incorrect searches per month (‘Nymar’, ‘Netymar’ ‘Neyamr’ – 111,000 searches combined).
Antoine Griezmann
The Barcelona star who returned to his former club has finally returned to his original form after being more of an outsider in the Catalan giants. So, he completes the top five as the Atletico Madrid star gets an average of 67,000 inaccurate searches every month.
The other five of them includes Lionel Messi, who also gets as much as 55,900 incorrect searches every month. People misspell his name with “Leonel Messi” or “Meesi” which seems a very common mistake. Other players like Gianluigi Donnarumma and Mohamed Salah are not spared, getting over or as much as 40,000 inaccurate searches per month.
Also, people are quite rightfully confused to spell Henrikh Mkhitaryan and mistakenly search him using “Mkhitarian” while Robert Lewandowski gets the same treatment too and people are confused with his title, spelling him “Lewandoski” which seems unjust.
The most misspelled English footballer’s name
Interestingly, Harry Kane is the most misspelled English player’s name, with an average of 11,150 incorrect searches per month. The Tottenham striker ranks 19th overall with the most common misspelling of his name being ‘Hary Kane’ and ‘Harry Cane’. Jadon Sancho is the second highest misspelt English name, ranking 22nd overall, followed by Raheem Sterling in 28th.
Methodology
- Liverugbytickets.co.uk sought to determine the most misspelled footballers’ names online.
- The obtained dataset covers the most popular footballer in the world in 2021 and was gathered from multiple online sources by using in-house metrics.
- Following this, each footballer’s name was inputted into the Ahrefs keyword explorer tool – which showcased all related terms, including misspellings.
- The average monthly searches for the misspelling were subsequently collected.
- Following the collection of data, the sample was then aggregated by player name and was ranked in descending order based on the total average number of times per month they were spelled wrong.
- The top 15 results were presented in the final results table.
- All online search volumes extracted from Ahrefs are monthly global averages.
- All data was collected on 25/11/2021 and is correct as of then.
