La Liga is one of the top football leagues in the world. Several greats have played in Spain’s top-tier football division over the years. The league has had a total of 62 clubs since its start in 1929. Only nine clubs, however, have won the title of Spanish champions. Two teams have emerged as the dominant forces among them: Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Real Madrid holds the record for most titles won, with 34 victories. With 24 La Liga titles, Barcelona is second only to their arch-rivals. Some of the best players in history have played for these two clubs. Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta, and Alfredo Di Stefano are among the players who have played for them. 10. Xavi Hernandez: 8 titles
The current Barcelona manager is regarded as one of the all-time best midfielders. The former Spain international spent 11 years with the Catalan club, earning four Champions League crowns and other cup titles. Xavi also has eight La Liga titles to his name with the Blaugrana and is the club’s second-highest appearance maker.
9. Sergio Busquets: 8 titles
Ever since the turn of the century, the deep-lying midfielder has been a crucial aspect of Barcelona’s and Spain’s success. The Spaniard came up through the Catalan club’s youth ranks and has played over 600 times for them.
In the 2008-09 and 2014-15 seasons, he was a member of treble-winning teams. Busquets has won the La Liga title eight times in his 14-year professional career, notably three times in a row from 2008 to 2011.
8. Gerard Pique: 8 titles
Gerard Pique, a center defender from Barcelona’s junior academy, is another name on the list. He has eight La Liga titles to his credit. The Spanish defender began his career at La Masia and later transferred to Manchester United, where he won the Premier League.
He later returned to the Catalan club, where he was a key figure during the club’s most successful period. Pique also has four Champions League titles to his name, as well as a World Cup and a European Championship.
7. Amancio: 9 titles
Amancio began his career with Deportivo La Coruna before joining Real Madrid in the 1960s and 1970s when the club dominated Spanish football. From 1962 until 1976, the Spanish footballer won nine league titles, all of which he achieved while playing for Los Blancos. In the league, he made almost 300 appearances for Real Madrid.
6. Santillana: 9 titles
Real Madrid’s Spanish striker spent 17 seasons with the club, appearing in over 600 games. Los Blancos’ supremacy of La Liga in the 1970s and 1980s was aided by the Cantabria-born footballer, who helped the team win nine league titles and many cups. With the capital club, he also won the UEFA Cup in 1985 and 1986.
5. Jose Antonio Camacho: 9 titles
Jose Camacho spent his whole career at Real Madrid, having progressed through the club’s youth divisions. He played for the club for 15 years and made over 600 matches. Real Madrid’s supremacy of Spanish football in the 1970s and 1980s coincided with the defender’s time with the club.
He was a part of the team that won 19 major titles, including nine La Liga crowns. After retiring from professional football, Jose Antonio Camacho led the club two consecutive times.
4. Andres Iniesta: 9 titles
Andres Iniesta, one of the best players in football history, was a key figure in Barcelona’s and Spain’s golden age, helping the clubs win many titles. The Spanish midfielder came via La Masia and spent 22 years with the Catalan club, where he was a part of two historic trebles in 2009 and 2015. Iniesta won 35 major trophies throughout his career, including nine La Liga titles and four Champions League titles.
3. Pirri: 10 titles
Jose Martinez Sanchez played with Real Madrid for the bulk of his career and was a key figure in the club’s success in the 1960s and 1970s. Pirri joined Los Blancos as a 19-year-old and went on to win 15 major titles with the club. With Real Madrid, the Spanish midfielder won 10 La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies, and a European Cup.
2. Lionel Messi: 10 titles
Lionel Messi, arguably the best player in football history, is second on the list of players with the most La Liga titles. The Argentine spent the majority of his career with Barcelona, where he won a club-record 35 trophies. He came via the legendary La Masia development system.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has a variety of individual La Liga records, including the most goals, hat-tricks, and assists, as well as a ten-time league title. He made his first-team debut in 2004 and remained with Barcelona until 2021 when he moved to PSG.
1. Paco Gento: 12 titles
Paco Gento is a football great in every meaning of the word. He is one of Spain’s most decorated players of all time. Following the departure of Alfredo Di Stefano and the retirement of Ferenc Puskas, Gento commanded Real Madrid for over two decades.
With Los Blancos, he won the La Liga title a record 12 times, the most by any player in the club’s and league’s history. He is also the only player to win the European Cup six times, after competing in an unprecedented eight European Cup finals.
