What the Teaser Reveals

The minute-long teaser opens with a haunting question: “Whatever happened to Tommy Shelby? The famous gypsy gangster?” We see Murphy’s character wandering through forests and graveyards, looking isolated and withdrawn. “I’m not that man anymore,” Tommy insists—but fans know better.

Rapid-fire images follow: explosive violence, Nazi threats, bloodshed, and a massive building explosion. Then comes the inevitable pull: “Tommy… you’ve got to come back.” As Tommy slams his hands on a table, it’s clear the self-imposed exile that ended Season 6 is over.

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the film takes place in 1940 Birmingham amid World War II chaos. Tommy faces “his most destructive reckoning yet” with the future of both his family and the country at stake. He must confront his demons and decide whether to embrace his legacy or burn it all down.

What Creator Steven Knight Promises

Series creator Steven Knight returned to write this cinematic chapter, and he’s not holding back. “The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders,” Knight told Netflix. “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”

Director Tom Harper, who helmed several acclaimed series episodes, brings the saga to the big screen with expanded scope and budget. The film was shot across Northern England with the same atmospheric bleakness that made the series iconic.

Why Tommy’s Return Makes Sense

Remember Season 6’s ending? Tommy discovered his “terminal brain tumor” diagnosis was fake—a manipulation orchestrated by his enemies. While Tommy doesn’t literally die, he faces consequences for his ruthless leadership of the Peaky Blinders and chooses to start over with a clean slate.

But as the teaser makes clear, starting over isn’t an option when fascism threatens Britain and his family needs him. Cillian Murphy explained his return: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

The Dual Release Strategy

Following the theatrical model that worked for films like Glass Onion, Netflix will give The Immortal Man a two-week theatrical run starting March 6, 2026, before the global streaming premiere on March 20, 2026. This allows fans to experience Tommy’s finale on the big screen while maintaining Netflix’s streaming dominance.

All six seasons of the original series remain available on Netflix, making now the perfect time for a complete rewatch before the film arrives.

FAQs

Do I need to watch all six seasons before The Immortal Man?

Absolutely. The Immortal Man directly continues from the Season 6 finale, picking up Tommy’s story after his self-imposed exile. The film assumes viewers understand Tommy’s complex history, family dynamics, past traumas, and the fake brain tumor revelation that closed the series. Without watching the show, you’ll miss crucial character motivations, relationships, and the emotional weight of Tommy’s journey. All six seasons are streaming on Netflix now.

Will there be more Peaky Blinders content after The Immortal Man?

Steven Knight has previously mentioned plans for a Peaky Blinders spin-off series set in Boston during the American Prohibition era, though no official greenlight has been announced. The Immortal Man is positioned as the conclusion to Tommy Shelby’s story specifically, bringing his character arc full circle. However, given the franchise’s popularity and Knight’s expanded universe ambitions, the Peaky Blinders world could continue through different characters and timelines beyond this film.
