The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3, Episode 7 “Hourglass” Recap: Renata’s Death Hands Dillard the Throne

The penultimate episode of “Dead City” Season 3 just delivered one of its most brutal turns yet. “Hourglass” strips away Dillard’s harmless-eccentric facade for good, revealing a calculated tyrant beneath — and leaves Maggie and Negan on the outside looking in as the finale approaches.

The Walking Dead: Dead City Episode 7 : Overview

What Actually Happened

The episode returns to the present timeline after Negan kills Fabian, an act that immediately puts him at odds with Dillard. Dillard returns to the hospital community claiming Negan attacked him too, spinning a story that turns Renata and the rest of the group against Negan. Maggie, however, refuses to accept Dillard’s version of events without hearing Negan’s side directly, and gets 35 minutes from Renata to convince him to surrender before the Dozen storms the tavern where he’s holed up.

Inside, Negan admits to killing Fabian, explaining it was because Fabian planned to kill Maggie. Meanwhile, outside, Luis reminds his sister Renata of the principles she once claimed to stand for as a leader, pushing her to reconsider her plan to execute Negan without proper judgment. Renata ultimately has a change of heart — she decides Negan shouldn’t be killed without due process and orders her fighters to stand down.

That decision costs her everything. Dillard refuses to accept the order, shooting Renata in the chest and killing her, then knocking Luis unconscious when he tries to intervene. With Renata dead and Luis down, Dillard seizes control of the Dozen and orders an all-out attack on the tavern.

Maggie and Negan fight back using guns and improvised firebombs, eventually escaping the bar with an assist from Hershel creating an opening for them. But their survival doesn’t mean victory — Dillard raids the community’s armory, seizes its food supplies, takes hostages inside the hospital, and dons his old NYPD uniform as he settles into his terrifying new role as the settlement’s self-appointed authority.

Why This Episode Matters

“Hourglass” completes Dillard’s transformation from eccentric background player into a genuine tyrant, driven by the loss of the walker companions that once gave his life structure. It’s a fitting reversal for a franchise built on themes of survival and power in a post-apocalyptic world — the kind explored throughout The Walking Dead media franchise since its earliest days. With Maggie, Negan, and Hershel now locked out of the community they once called home, the season finale is set up to force an uncomfortable role reversal: Negan, long treated as the community’s most dangerous threat, may now be its only hope.
