One field that is getting more and more popular is Online betting India and it is crystal clear that such a great sector with so much cash flow requires certain control and regulation. So how does it stand with gambling in India? What is the history? And what is the current state of online gambling in India? We have the answers you need to know!

The history of gambling in India

The history of gambling in India is longer than many may think. Gambling has been around for extremely long periods. The second national Sanskrit epic Ramayana mentioned already gambling boards and games similar to chess dating back to more than 7000 before Christ.

Of course, the gambling and playing has evolved in the following centuries as well as India has faced several political challenges. In the Public Gambling Act of 1867 the lawmakers firstly introduced a legislation designed to monitor the Indian gambling activities. The so-called “Gambling Legislations” date obviously back far from the nowadays online casino activities, while still having similar aims. The one aim was to collect taxes, the second to protect both providers and players from fraud and corruption. As the sector produces large amounts of money which are very hard to control, the court was not very much in favour of games of probability. However, gambling is legal in the states of Goa, Sikkim, Union Territory, Daman and Diu.

The current state of online gambling

Obviously the age of the internet and all its opportunities have changed the whole game and new legislation is required in order to keep up with the fast technological development. As more and more providers of online casinos have switched to crypto currencies instead of usual fiat currencies, the monitoring and regulation of those payments has become even more complex and hard for the government.

Due to the seventh schedule of the Indian Constitution, the Indian government has full control over all gambling activities on its territory. Currently lotteries and betting on horse races are legal in India. As the Indian legislation sees horse racing as something dependent on skills it does not fall at all into the category of gambling. Furthermore, online gambling as well as land based casinos are legal in the states that also allow lottery such as Goa, Sikkim, Nagaland, and Daman since the year 1976, while other provinces like Maharashtra believe in the Bombay Act from 1887 and do not allow any gambling activities on their land.

eSports such as Fifa tournaments have caused a wide discussion between legislators and finally have been accepted as a game of skill in Sikkim and Nagaland, Telangana and Arunachal Pradesh.

To conclude one can say that gambling in India in 2021 is still widely unregulated and lawmakers have to take action in order to create a sufficient legal framework in order to keep up.
