‘The Perfect Lie’ Review: Why This Dutch Netflix Thriller Might Be 2026’s Best Foreign Series

Forget everything you expect from a “Dutch Netflix drama.” The Perfect Lie (De Eetclub) ditches the usual crime-drug cliché playbook for something far more layered — a slow-burn thriller about friendship, secrets, and one very deadly fire. It’s already being called one of the standout non-English shows of the year.

What The Show Is About

Based on Saskia Noort’s bestselling novel, the series follows Karen, who moves to the wealthy Dutch village of Bergen and is welcomed into an enviable social circle known as the Eetclub. Life looks perfect — big houses, good wine, endless dinner parties — until one villa burns down, killing a member of the group. As Karen digs deeper, she discovers everyone in the friend group is hiding something.

The Perfect Lie: Overview

Why Critics Are Raving

Unlike typical thrillers that reveal their twists within the first two episodes, The Perfect Lie keeps its secrets close, peeling back one layer of deception at a time without feeling needlessly cryptic. The cast, especially Haverkort alongside Charlie-Chan Dagelet, Noortje Herlaar, and Rifka Lodeizen, earns particular praise for elevating the material. The finale reportedly ends on a massive cliffhanger, all but guaranteeing demand for a second season.
