The Pendragon Cycle Episode 4 Ending Explained: Merlin’s Shocking Return Changes Everything

Episode 4 of The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin delivers jaw-dropping revelations as Merlin reunites with his family and Britain’s battle for the High King throne intensifies. Here’s everything you need to know about “The King of Maridunum” and what Merlin’s return means for the kingdom’s fate.

The Pendragon Cycle Episode 4 Key Plot Points

Did Merlin Truly Return?

Yes, Merlin returns—but not in the way viewers expected. The immortal wizard reappears at his grandfather King Avallach’s court, shocking both family and political allies. However, his homecoming is bittersweet; while he demonstrates magical abilities by stopping Uther mid-attack, Merlin deliberately avoids reclaiming the Fisher King’s sword, suggesting unresolved trauma from his past reign.

The episode reveals Merlin once ruled Maridunum before mysteriously vanishing. When Tewdrig (current king) welcomes him back to his old chambers, tensions explode as Uther realizes Merlin’s former royal status. This revelation creates mistrust that could splinter Aurelius’s alliance.

The Power Struggle for Britain’s Throne

King Avallach perfectly captures the chaos: “There are more men than sheep and more princes than crows on the battlefield.” Multiple contenders—including Aurelius, Uther, and regional kings—stake claims, threatening civil war while Saxon invaders lurk at Britain’s borders.

Aurelius’s campaign gains momentum as Merlin leverages his reputation and magic to secure key supporters like Morcant and Tewdrig. Yet Uther’s growing paranoia about Merlin’s “fae folk” nature threatens to fracture their fragile coalition.

Morgain’s Sinister Scheme Unfolds

The episode’s darkest moments belong to Morgain, who performs a demonic ritual witnessed by her son Lot. Her family faces an impossible choice: support Aurelius (potentially exposing their Saxon alliance) or maintain loyalty to enemies of Britain.

Morgain’s manipulation reaches disturbing levels when she kisses Lot inappropriately after he discovers her dark magic, adding psychological horror to the fantasy drama. Her ultimate plan remains shrouded in mystery, but she’s clearly positioning herself as a power broker behind whoever claims the throne.
