Christopher Nolan is trading dreamscapes and time loops for ancient seas. His next film, The Odyssey, sails into theaters on July 17, 2026, promising a grounded, gritty take on one of history’s most legendary journeys.

What’s the Story About?

The film draws from Homer’s epic poem, the Odyssey, picking up right after the Trojan War. King Odysseus of Ithaca just wants to get home to his wife and son — but the gods (and one very angry Cyclops) have other plans. What should be a short voyage stretches into years of trials at sea.

Nolan has described his approach as a grounded interpretation of myth, pulling inspiration from historical epics like Andrei Rublev and Ran rather than typical fantasy blockbusters.

The Odyssey: Meet the Cast

Matt Damon leads as Odysseus, the war-weary king trying to find his way home. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, his devoted wife fending off suitors back in Ithaca, while Tom Holland plays their son, Telemachus.

The film also brings together Robert Pattinson as the scheming suitor Antinous, Zendaya as the goddess Athena, and Charlize Theron as the nymph Calypso, who becomes a major obstacle in Odysseus’s journey home. Lupita Nyong’o takes on a double role as Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra.
