What Is Allen About?
The logline is deceptively simple — and completely irresistible:
“Twenty years after Petey lost the best friend he ever had, Allen’s back…”
Netflix describes it as a “heartwarming tale of friendship and adventure” set in a sun-drenched Queensland coastal town. The story zooms in on a reunion between two childhood best friends separated for two decades, and what that reconnection unravels about love, memory, and growing up.
Creator Daley Pearson, who grew up in Queensland himself, described the film in deeply personal terms when filming began:
“Allen is really a story about love, family and all those big and small moments from childhood that end up shaping who we are when we grow up.”
Netflix has called it an “unusual package” that explores the messy, bittersweet transition from childhood to adulthood — the kind of layered family storytelling that made Bluey resonate with parents just as powerfully as with kids.
Cast — Who’s in It?
T.J. Power (Eat Pray Love, The Sapphires) leads the film as Petey. The full ensemble includes Benedict Hardie as Rory, Charlotte NicDao as Carly, Chaydon Jay as Roy, and Kaipo Heke as Nahuel. Notably, the identity of “Allen” himself remains under wraps — deliberately, it seems, adding an intriguing mystery to the film’s marketing.
The Team Behind It
Daley Pearson co-directs alongside Jeffrey Walker, known for The Artful Dodger and, fittingly, Apple Cider Vinegar (another major Netflix Australia hit). The script was written by Pearson and Sophie Miller (Thou Shalt Not Steal).
The film is fully backed by the Queensland Government through Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy, and shot entirely at Screen Queensland Studios in Brisbane with location work spread across the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
Allen arrives as part of Netflix’s increasingly impressive Australian original slate, joining Boy Swallows Universe, Territory, and the upcoming final season of Heartbreak High. Keep up with all things Netflix Australia right here on TechnoSports.
