“The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare” Review: The True Crime Doc That Finally Gets It Right

Not every true crime documentary earns its place in an already crowded genre — but Netflix’s latest, “The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare,” makes a compelling case that patience and respect can outshine speed and sensationalism.

What Is the Documentary About?

The three-part docuseries, executive produced by Joe Berlinger and directed by Skye Borgman, revisits the shocking November 2022 quadruple homicide in Moscow, Idaho, where University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle were fatally stabbed at an off-campus house. Surviving roommates called 911, and investigators initially had little to work with beyond footage of a speeding white Elantra and a knife sheath left behind. Months later, DNA evidence led them to 28-year-old Washington State University PhD student Bryan Kohberger.

Why This Doc Stands Apart

Unlike competing projects that rushed to release before Kohberger’s sentencing, Borgman’s approach favors depth over speed. The series meticulously reconstructs the crime’s timeline, the family’s reactions, and the investigation’s struggles, drawing on redacted law enforcement footage, bodycam material, and firsthand interviews with those closest to the case. Notably, it earned the trust of key family and friends in a way other adaptations reportedly did not, giving it a more grounded, source-driven authority.

Beyond the procedural details, the documentary works hard to honor the victims as people, not just headlines — showing glimpses of their lives, friendships, and personalities through home videos and heartfelt testimonies from loved ones.

Final Verdict

While the series occasionally stretches to fill its runtime, its restraint and empathy set it apart from rushed, sensationalized takes on the same tragedy. By centering the victims’ humanity and the community’s resilience, “College Nightmare” delivers one of the more thoughtful true crime docuseries of the year.
