The Great Pig Mix-Up: Palm Royale S2E5’s Hilarious Kidnapping Twist Explained

Apple TV+’s Palm Royale just pulled off one of the season’s funniest misdirections. Episode 5, “Maxine Is Ready to Single Mingle,” finally answers the cliffhanger that left viewers hanging: who kidnapped Douglas Dellacorte? Spoiler alert—it wasn’t Pinky’s mob, despite all evidence pointing that way. The real culprits? The FBI, who had a very different agenda than collecting gambling debts.

Palm Royale Reveal: FBI, Not Mob

After Douglas vanished on his wedding day to Mitzi, panic ensued. Mitzi immediately suspected Pinky and Raquel, since Douglas owed them substantial gambling debts and had promised to pay them back with Norma’s mansion—before discovering Robert inherited everything instead.

The truth, however, proves far less sinister. The FBI detained Douglas because he helped Linda escape to Cuba after she was wrongly accused of involvement in President Kennedy’s assassination. Since Linda fled on Pinky’s private plane, the feds were actually after Pinky, using Douglas as leverage to build their case.

Episode 5 Key Events Timeline

The Hilarious Pig Subplot

The episode’s comedic highlight comes from a classic language barrier mix-up. When Dinah visits Raquel’s house to investigate, she overhears concerning Spanish conversation about someone trying to escape by chewing through ropes. Raquel orders her men to “throw some food down” and mentions killing this “pig” in two days.

Dinah, with her rudimentary Spanish skills, assumes they’re referring to Douglas as a pig—criminal slang for a hostage. This misunderstanding drives the entire rescue operation, with Perry rushing to Pinky’s mansion during Madge Post’s square dance to free Douglas, only to discover an actual pig destined for the dinner table.

It’s vintage Palm Royale—taking a serious situation and spinning it into absurdist comedy gold that somehow works perfectly within the show’s heightened reality.

Maxine’s Romantic Catastrophe

While the Douglas kidnapping mystery drives the episode’s plot, Maxine’s romantic life provides equally compelling drama. After finally agreeing to date the charming Dr. Dusty Magic, Maxine finds herself genuinely connecting with someone who isn’t using her for social climbing purposes.

The two successfully complete their mission to get money for Linda’s literacy program in Cuba, with Dusty even serving as the courier (codename: “Banana Slug”). Their chemistry feels authentic, with Maxine insisting on waiting until their third date for their first kiss—a refreshing boundary in a show about people with none.

Then Douglas returns home. When Dusty arrives at the Dellacorte mansion to continue their date, he witnesses Maxine on top of Douglas in a compromising position. What he doesn’t see? She was actually pushing him out of the house and accidentally fell on him.

Dusty simply says goodbye and walks away, heartbroken. Maxine’s confused and equally devastated, realizing her ex-husband has once again ruined her chances at happiness—this time completely unintentionally.

Linda’s Cuban Revolution

Meanwhile, across the ocean, Linda thrives in her Cuban exile. After Douglas dropped her off following her escape, she met Che Guevara’s half-brother and started teaching literacy to children in Sierra Maestra. Her ham radio message to Maxine—initially mistaken by Mary as communication with the spirit world—requests $100,000 to fund her charitable work.

Linda’s transformation from imprisoned socialite to revolutionary educator represents the show’s ongoing exploration of reinvention and purpose. While Maxine fights for a seat at Palm Beach’s elite table, Linda has found meaning beyond material wealth. The contrast between their paths speaks volumes about what truly matters.

The Evelyn-Maxine Sisterhood Fractures

The episode’s emotional gut-punch comes when Evelyn discovers Maxine helped Linda escape, causing the Rollins estate assets to be frozen. Furious, Evelyn declares she’ll become sole proprietor of Palm Royale and permanently ban Maxine from the club.

Their partnership, built on mutual ambition and genuine affection despite class differences, shatters because Douglas’s actions created ripple effects neither woman anticipated. It’s a reminder that in Palm Beach society, personal relationships always yield to power and money.

Robert’s Romantic Complications

The episode concludes with another romantic bombshell for Robert. After enjoying a secret date with FBI agent Tom at the empty federal building, Robert spots the “Prince of Luxembourg” Reginald by the pool—the very man Tom arrested last season, breaking Robert’s heart.

This love triangle setup promises explosive drama for upcoming episodes, especially since Robert has finally found stability with Tom. The reappearance of his first love threatens everything, and knowing Palm Royale, the consequences will be spectacular.

What the FBI Wanted from Douglas

Douglas’s cooperation with the FBI wasn’t entirely voluntary. They knew he helped Linda escape on Pinky’s plane, technically making him an accessory to harboring a fugitive. However, since Linda was wrongly accused and the FBI’s real target was Pinky’s smuggling operation, they released Douglas after extracting information about the mobster’s activities.

This creates interesting dynamics moving forward. Does Douglas now owe the FBI additional cooperation? Will Pinky discover Douglas talked to federal agents? The mid-season positioning suggests these questions will drive conflict in remaining episodes.

Looking Ahead: Midseason Momentum

With five episodes remaining until the January 14, 2026 finale, Palm Royale Season 2 has established several compelling storylines: Maxine’s fractured relationships with both Dusty and Evelyn, Douglas’s FBI entanglement potentially endangering him with Pinky, Robert’s romantic triangle with Tom and Reginald, Linda’s revolutionary work in Cuba, and the ongoing mystery of Norma’s true identity and her trophy room of victims’ belongings.

Episode 5 masterfully balances comedy (the pig misunderstanding), drama (Maxine and Dusty’s heartbreak), and intrigue (FBI involvement) while keeping the satirical social commentary sharp. For fans of sophisticated comedies that blend humor with genuine emotion, this mid-season entry delivers on all fronts.
