“The Doll” Review: Netflix’s Lush Polish Period Drama Turns a 19th-Century Classic into Prestige TV Gold

Warsaw, 1878. A woman refusing to settle. A fortune built on debt and ambition. Netflix’s “The Doll” takes Bolesław Prus’s beloved novel and turns it into one of the year’s most striking European originals — and it earns every bit of the praise.

What the series is about?

At the center is Izabela Łęcka (Sandra Drzymalska, “Sexify”), a sharp, ambitious young woman who keeps turning down suitors while dreaming of escaping to Paris to write for a feminist magazine. That plan collapses when her father, Count Tomasz Łęcki (Jacek Braciak), loses everything in a reckless business gamble.

Enter Stanisław Wokulski (Tomasz Schuchardt), a self-made entrepreneur returning to Warsaw with a controversial reputation and one goal: climb the social ladder — with Izabela as the prize. Director Paweł Maślona builds their dynamic slowly, layering repressed feeling, social entrapment, and quiet devastation rather than easy romance.

The Doll: Overview

Why it’s worth your time?

What separates “The Doll” from a typical costume drama is restraint. The Positivism era backdrop of Polish literature — all social realism and quiet critique — comes through clearly here, with servants given real interiority rather than background dressing. Maria Kania’s Marianna, a former sex worker turned servant, stands out as one of the show’s most fully realized characters.

The verdict: a gorgeous, intelligent take on ambition and emancipation, anchored by a lead who refuses to be a passive victim of her circumstances. If you loved the class tensions of “The Great” or the sweeping scale of “The Leopard,” this belongs on your list.
