What Is The Big C About?

The Big C follows Cathy Jamison, a reserved suburban high school teacher who receives a terminal Stage IV melanoma diagnosis. Rather than surrendering to fear or despair, Cathy makes a radical choice—she keeps her illness secret from her husband Paul and teenage son Adam while completely transforming how she lives.

Cathy’s newfound recklessness leads to impulsive, sometimes selfish decisions as she finally lives life on her own terms. The series explores how her choices ripple through her relationships with her immature but loving husband, rebellious son, eccentric neighbor Marlene, and challenging student Andrea. It’s a raw, honest look at mortality wrapped in dark humor.

Why The Big C Is Worth Watching

This award-winning series earned critical praise for its fearless writing and Laura Linney’s powerhouse performance. Linney, known for Netflix’s Ozark, delivers Emmy-worthy work as a woman confronting death while discovering what it truly means to be alive.

The stellar cast includes Oliver Platt (The Bear, Chicago Med) as Cathy’s husband, Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent) as her son, and Oscar-nominee Gabourey Sidibe (Precious, Empire) in a standout role. John Benjamin Hickey and the late Phyllis Somerville round out the exceptional ensemble.

What Makes The Big C Special?

Unlike typical medical dramas, The Big C balances heartbreak with humor, never becoming maudlin or preachy. It asks tough questions about how we’d live if tomorrow wasn’t guaranteed, presenting Cathy’s journey with authenticity and unexpected levity. The show ran four seasons on Showtime, with the final season condensed to four powerful episodes that provide closure.

For fans of character-driven dramas like Ozark or emotionally complex series, The Big C delivers unforgettable storytelling. It’s a celebration of life’s messy, beautiful contradictions.
