Apple recently launched the A16 Bionic chip for the iPhone 14 Pro series, touted to be the best mobile SoC currently. Indeed in the charts, Apple made it look very eye-candy, however, in real life, it looks like there are very less upgrades over the previous A15 Bionic to consider this new SoC.
Yes, though in terms of CPU performance Apple is far ahead of the Android competition when it comes to GPU, it looks like Apple hasn’t improved much. As you see @Golden_Reviewer has compared the A16 Bionic against a wide range of mobile SoCs in terms of GPU:
In the benchmarks, the A16 Bionic has a very nominal GPU performance upgrade as you see, however, it seems the average power consumption is lesser than the A16 Bionic. Interestingly, the GPU inside the A16 is only about 19% faster and it is expected that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will again bring down the gap between the iPhones and Androids.
When you compare both the A15 and A16 Bionic chips, the GPU performance upgrade is less than 5% which again is very sad. So, anyone who is buying an A15 Bionic will not mind much because the newer chip doesn’t have much to boast about or pay the extra money for.
