The 50 Grand Premiere Review: Fresh Concept Plagued by Bigg Boss Hangover

The 50 premiered on February 1, 2026, bringing 50 celebrities into a palace for gaming-based challenges—but the show’s biggest challenge isn’t the obstacle courses or musical chairs. It’s convincing contestants this isn’t another Bigg Boss season.

The 50 Premiere: Analysis

What Makes The 50 Different

Unlike typical captive reality shows, The 50 operates under “the Lion”—a masked game master with absolute decision-making power. There’s no traditional host guiding contestants through weekly journeys. Instead, contestants face daily tasks resembling childhood games, competing not for themselves but for their fans.

The Unique Twist: The Rs 50 lakh prize pot doesn’t go to winning contestants—it goes to lucky fans of the best performers. However, the premiere failed to clarify how fans participate or how winners are selected, creating ambiguity around the show’s core concept.

Episode One Highlights

The premiere wasted no time establishing intensity. Fifty contestants were divided into 10 teams of five, captained by Urvashi Dholakia, Rajat Dalal, Mr Faisu, Karan Patel, Krishna Shroff, Monalisa, Prince Narula, Ridhi Dogra, Nikki Tamboli, and Shiv Thakare.

First Task: Obstacle course with Himesh Reshammiya’s live performance as background music. Twenty-five contestants advanced, while the bottom 25 played musical chairs. Ten landed in the danger zone, and team captains voted to eliminate content creator Vanshaj Singh for not interacting with others.

Explosive Moments:

• Karan Patel threatened Siddharth Bhardwaj after being pushed during the race: “I’ll break your bones next time”
• Urvashi Dholakia struggled through the obstacle course, requiring fellow contestants’ help
• Nikki Tamboli accused TV stars of forming a clique and ignoring others
• Maxtern prepared to confront Lakshay Kaushik over past controversies

What Works

The show delivers genuinely engaging tasks that keep viewers invested. Unlike Bigg Boss’s manufactured drama or unnecessarily drawn-out episodes, The 50 maintains brisk pacing with organic conflicts. The fast elimination format creates urgency, and the childhood game-inspired tasks are relatable and entertaining.

The show’s originality stands out—it doesn’t copy Rise and Fall, The Traitors, or other international formats. The clear vision and realistic standards for contestants create refreshing authenticity.

What Doesn’t Work

The Bigg Boss Problem: Several contestants—Nikki Tamboli, Rajat Dalal, Bebika Dhurve, Archana Gautam, and Shrutika Arjun—haven’t shed their Bigg Boss mentality. They’re picking unnecessary fights instead of focusing on strategy and skill. Similarly, Digvijay Rathee and Siwet Tomar carry Roadies baggage.

Visibility Issues: With 50 contestants competing for screen time, many disappeared. Lovekesh Kataria, Nehal Chudasama, Dushyant Kukreja, Shiny Doshi, and Yuvika Chaudhary made blink-and-miss appearances.

Unclear Fan Mechanics: The show desperately needs to clarify how fans participate and how “lucky winners” are selected for prize money.

Final Verdict

The 50 has strong potential to carve its niche in Indian reality TV—if contestants recognize this is a skill-based competition, not a personality contest. The fresh format and engaging tasks deserve contestants who understand the assignment.
