The IAAF World Championship is an athletic event held every two years and organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The competition was conducted every four years after 1991. The tournament was inspired by the withdrawal of the men’s 50km category from the International Olympic Committee in 1976. The competition had attracted almost 2,000 athletes from 203 nations and territories by 2003. The event added a women’s division in 2005.
