When a film about a stubborn 70-year-old village moneylender quietly sneaks past the Rs. 30 crore mark without much fanfare, you know Tamil cinema’s love for slice-of-life storytelling is alive and thriving. Thaai Kizhavi, starring the evergreen Radhikaa Sarathkumar and directed by Sivakumar Murugesan, is doing exactly that — and then some.

A Jaw-Dropping 2nd Saturday Surge

The real story here is the 57% jump on 2nd Saturday over the previous day — and a drop of merely 15% compared to its 1st Saturday. That’s the kind of hold that signals strong word-of-mouth, the most powerful marketing tool in Tamil cinema. The film is firmly on course to close its 10-day run at Rs. 36–38 crore gross and eyeing the Rs. 50 crore club over its full theatrical lifetime.

Industry verdict? Clean Hit — a term that carries real weight in South Indian box office accounting, where a film recoups costs and delivers solid returns for all stakeholders.

What Is Thaai Kizhavi About?

The film revolves around Pavunuthayi, a fierce and emotionally distant 70-year-old matriarch who doubles as a ruthless village moneylender. When a triggering incident forces her estranged sons back home, buried family wounds are ripped open — and the whole village gets caught in the chaos. It’s bold, heartfelt, and anchored brilliantly by Radhikaa Sarathkumar’s commanding performance.

Films rooted in family drama and strong female leads have consistently punched above their weight at the Tamil box office, and Thaai Kizhavi is the latest proof of that trend.

Why This Success Matters

Produced by Sivakarthikeyan Productions, this is a film that quietly outperformed expectations — no massive star cast, no marquee action sequences, just authentic storytelling.
