Top 10 highest successful run-chases in Test cricket of all time

On Tuesday, July 5, at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England defeated India in a renowned victory while also completing their largest successful chase in Test cricket. The match was the fifth Test of the Pataudi Trophy.

Thanks to unbroken hundreds from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow in the second innings, England was able to successfully chase down 378 runs in 76.4 overs with seven wickets in hand.

Here we take a look at the top 10 highest successful run-chases in Test matches

10) Australia vs Pakistan

Australia chased Pakistan in Hobbart in 1999. They had a target of 269 runs. Australia ended up winning the tie by 4 wickets.

9) Pakistan vs Sri Lanka

Pakistan faced Sri Lanka in 2015 at Pallekele. They gave a target of 377 runs. Shan Masood Younis Khan lead the charge with their batting, scoring 125 and 175 runs respectively. In the end, Pakistan were victorious by 7 wickets.

8) England vs India

The latest Test series between England and India played at Birmingham ranks at the eighth position. With a target of 377, England completed their highest ever runs chase by outplaying India in the fourth and the fifth days of the series.

7) India vs England

England visited India in 2008. In the match played out in Chennai, the British gave a 387-run target to the hosts. Virender Sehwag was the man of the match as India ended up beating the visitors by 6 wickets.

6) Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe

When Sri Lanka hosted Zimbabwe in 2017 at Colombo, they had to chase a target of 288 runs. The hosts ended up scoring 391 as they won by 4 wickets.

5) West Indies vs Bangladesh

West Indies made a turnaround against Bangladesh in 2021. They had a target of 395. The Caribbean side ended up winning by 3 wickets.

4) India vs West Indies

India made an inspiring runs chase against West Indies back in 1976. With a target of 403 runs to chase, the Indians secured victory by a margin of 6 wickets.

South Africa chased a target of 414 runs in their Test against Australia

3) Australia vs England

The Aussies beat England in their own backyard in 1948, when they were given a target of 404 runs. They ended up winning by 7 wickets.

2) South Africa vs Australia

South Africa are another team on the list that successfully completed a runs chase on their opponent’s home turf. In 2008, at Perth, The South Africans were given a target of 414 runs. They won by 6 wickets.

1) West Indies vs Australia

West Indies have completed the highest ever runs chase. It was against Australia in the year 2003. With a target of 418 runs, they managed to win by 3 wickets.
