Why Tesla’s India Pricing is Premium

The base price would be 6.78 million rupees ($79,089) for the long-range, rear-wheel drive vehicle, according to a presentation by the company during the showroom launch Tuesday. By comparison, the price tag is around $44,990 in the U.S without a federal tax credit.

The significant price difference stems from India’s high import duties on EVs. Tesla’s price tag in the Indian market is much higher than in other countries because of import levies, making it a premium offering targeting affluent buyers.

Tesla’s Strategic Market Position

Experts told CNBC that Tesla will compete in the premium segment of the market with the likes of BMW, rather than with local EVs like those from Tata Motors. This positioning aligns with Tesla’s global brand strategy while acknowledging India’s diverse automotive market.

The Mumbai showroom isn’t just about sales—it’s designed as an “Experience Centre” where potential buyers can explore Tesla’s technology, schedule test drives, and understand the brand’s ecosystem.

What’s Next for Tesla in India?

Tesla’s Indian journey has just begun. The carmaker is taking bookings for the Model Y in Delhi and Gurgaon, where the next showrooms will open soon, indicating expansion plans beyond Mumbai.

With India’s government pushing electric mobility and infrastructure development, Tesla’s entry could accelerate premium EV adoption. The company’s advanced features like over-the-air updates, Autopilot technology, and extensive charging network support position it uniquely in India’s evolving automotive landscape.
