The Indian Super League transfer market has witnessed its most explosive deal of the summer as Tekcham Abhishek Singh completes his blockbuster move to Mohun Bagan in a deal worth over ₹8.1 crore. The 22-year-old Manipur-born defender has become the crown jewel of ISL’s domestic transfer market, leaving arch-rivals East Bengal and FC Goa in his wake.
From Reserve Team Dreams to National Team Reality
Singh’s journey reads like a modern football fairy tale. Just three years ago, he was grinding it out with Punjab FC’s reserve team, catching the eye of scouts with his tireless work ethic and natural attacking instincts. Today, he’s not only an Indian international but also the subject of the most expensive domestic transfer in recent ISL history.
“When I first started with Punjab’s reserves, I never imagined I’d be wearing the national team jersey,” Singh reflected during a recent interview. His debut for India came in March 2024 under coach Manolo Marquez in a friendly against the Maldives—a moment that transformed him from a promising prospect into a coveted asset.
The Transfer Saga: A Three-Way Battle
The pursuit of Singh’s signature turned into one of the most intense bidding wars in ISL history. Here’s how the drama unfolded:
Transfer Timeline & Bids
| Club | Initial Bid | Final Status | Reason for Withdrawal |
|---|---|---|---|
| East Bengal | ₹1.3 crore | Withdrew | High salary demands |
| Mohun Bagan | ₹1.5 crore → ₹1.8 crore | Successful | Met all conditions |
| FC Goa | Undisclosed | Withdrew | Escalating transfer fee |
| Kerala Blasters | Early interest | No formal bid | Timing issues |
East Bengal fired the first shot with a ₹1.3 crore bid that Punjab FC swiftly rejected. Mohun Bagan responded with ₹1.5 crore, only to see that offer turned down as well. As the bidding war intensified, FC Goa joined the fray before ultimately stepping back from the escalating demands.
“Both East Bengal and FC Goa wanted to sign Tekcham Abhishek Singh, but it was Mohun Bagan who fulfilled all the demands of the deal,” revealed a source close to the negotiations.
Breaking Down the Mega Deal
The final agreement showcases Mohun Bagan’s commitment to dominating Indian football:
Contract Details
| Component | Amount | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer Fee to Punjab FC | ₹1.8 crore | One-time |
| Annual Salary | ₹2.1 crore average | 3 years |
| Contract Extension | Optional | Additional terms |
| Total Deal Value | ₹8.1+ crore | Excluding bonuses |
This three-year contract with an extension option represents more than just numbers—it’s a statement of intent from the reigning ISL champions.
What Makes Singh Special?
Singh’s versatility sets him apart in the modern game. Standing at 5’9″, he combines the pace of a winger with the defensive discipline of a traditional full-back. His 1,958 minutes of action in the 2024-25 ISL season tell the story of consistency and reliability that caught national team coach Manolo Marquez’s attention.
Singh’s 2024-25 Season Stats
- Minutes Played: 1,958 across all competitions
- Position Flexibility: Can operate on both flanks
- Style: Modern attacking full-back
- International Caps: 3 appearances for India
- Age: 22 years old
His ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases makes him an ideal fit for Jose Molina’s tactical system at Mohun Bagan. The Spanish coach is reportedly planning to use Singh as a regular starter, with his final position—left or right flank—to be determined based on tactical needs.
Impact on Indian Football
This transfer represents more than just a player changing clubs; it signals a new era of investment in domestic talent. At a time when many ISL clubs have paused their transfer activities following recent FSDL meetings, Mohun Bagan’s bold move sends a clear message about their ambitions.
The deal also highlights the growing market value of Indian players. Singh’s journey from a reserve team player to an ₹8+ crore asset demonstrates the potential pathways available to young Indian footballers willing to work for their dreams.
What’s Next for Singh and Mohun Bagan?
With the paperwork expected to be completed soon, Singh will join a Mohun Bagan squad already brimming with talent. His integration into the team will be crucial as they prepare for the 2025-26 season, where they’ll be expected to defend their ISL title while competing in continental competitions.
Coach Jose Molina faces an enviable problem: how to best utilize Singh’s attacking instincts while maintaining defensive solidity. The Spaniard’s tactical flexibility suggests Singh could be deployed in various roles, from traditional full-back to wing-back in a three-man defense.
The signing also sets a precedent for future domestic transfers, potentially inflating the market for top Indian talent—a development that could benefit the overall standard of the league.
