Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 Tri-Fold Concept Smartphone Unveiled at IFA Berlin

Tecno unveiled its latest concept, the Phantom Ultimate 2, at IFA Berlin on Wednesday. The tri-folding tablet employs a triple-foldable screen with two hinges going in multiple directions as explained in the video. Set to follow in the footsteps of Tecno’s latest rollable smartphone design, which was shown off at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona known as Phantom Ultimate had been succeeded by The Phantom Ultimate 2. The resulting device, shown in images this afternoon with a bar form factor and when opened up to showcase its full 10-inch inner display, is incredibly free from creasing.

However, Tecno is yet to reveal if the Phantom Ultimate 2 will hit the market anytime soon. Tecno has equipped the Phantom Ultimate 2 with a 6.48-inch cover display and a 10-inch LTPO OLED inner screen boasting a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Notably, the device is claimed to be the first foldable smartphone to incorporate touch and display driver integration (TDDI) technology, which combines the display driver and touch sensor into a single chip.

Ergonomically, the Phantom Ultimate 2 is 11mm thick, placing it in line with other book-style foldable smartphones like the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which measures 10.5mm thick, despite the Tecno device featuring an additional foldable screen. Remarkably, it is even slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has a 12.1mm thickness when folded.

The device’s dual-hinge mechanism has reportedly been tested through 300,000 folds and unfolds. Additionally, the Phantom Ultimate 2 houses an ultra-slim battery, measuring just 0.25mm in thickness. While Tecno has shown off the tri-fold concept, it hasn’t indicated that production is on the horizon. The main reason is usually to showcase the company’s technological capabilities and what it has been working on. Nonetheless, Tecno could soon have a new challenger to steer off as previous reports suggest Huawei is working on the world’s first tri-fold design smartphone that may launch in October.
