The government has made several steps to make Tamil Nadu a global center for information technology, and the IT industry would play a significant role in helping the state’s GDP reach USD 1 trillion by 2030, according to Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday.

He made the remarks after launching the 20th edition of Connect 2021, which was co-hosted by the CII and the Electronic Corporations of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT).

Soon after the DMK reclaimed power in May, the Tamil Nadu government unveiled an ambitious goal to grow the state’s GDP to USD 1 trillion by 2030.

“IT plays a vital role in the progress of a state and also in bringing big-ticket investments. I desire that this conclave leads to the creation of new job opportunities and taking the state in the growth path,” he said.

During the meeting, Stalin also unveiled the ‘Data Centre Policy’ of the Information Technology Department.

Among other states, Tamil Nadu holds a distinct position in the creation of data centers, he said, adding that the government has launched the Data Centre strategy to stimulate investments in the data center sectors.

He urged the software entrepreneurs assembled at the event to incorporate future technology into their businesses and guaranteed them the government’s assistance.

“This government desires that in every sector like agriculture, production, services, there has to be a role of the IT,” he said.

Stalin stated that the government was implementing the Centre’s BharathNet scheme to 12,525 village panchayats to provide internet in all panchayats in the state, and expressed hope that through these digital services, internet education, and telemedicine facilities would be available in the villages.

The chief minister stated that the government has taken several initiatives such as expanding the Chennai Metro Rail and the Chennai airport, to improve the state’s overall infrastructure. New investments in the IT industry should be made, and current technology should be improved. According to him, new employment would be produced as a result of this, assuring the state’s overall growth.

He claimed that Tamil Nadu was leading from the front in the IT sector, which included hardware and software development, mobile phone manufacture, and computer and electronic component manufacturing.

He stated that the state played a critical role in software exports and that Tamil Nadu accounted for 16 percent of the country’s overall electronic industry.
