The virtual currency was an afterthought, added late in development—GTA Online had been designed without any micro-transactions.
The shift to online mode came with its own set of issues when it launched, with a lot of bugs and troubles as well. Despite these bumps in the road, GTA Online turned out to be a phenomenal success and still does well to this day, just like GTA 5, which sold 205 million copies (well beyond anything Take-Two thought possible).
