Anne Hathaway Lures Dakota Johnson Into The Darkness — Official Trailer For Colleen Hoover’s ‘Verity’ Is Here

One of the most eagerly anticipated book-to-screen adaptations of 2026 has officially unveiled its full-length trailer — and it is every bit as chilling and seductive as readers of the source material expected. Amazon MGM Studios shared a full-length trailer for the movie Tuesday featuring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett. Verity is coming to theatres on October 2, 2026.

What The Official Trailer Shows

While Amazon MGM recently unveiled a trailer for the film at CinemaCon, the latest trailer is different. It finds Lowen walking into the darkness of Verity’s home, with the author lying ill in bed. The camera pans over to Jeremy, who promptly begins making out with Lowen with his wife in the room.

But as the two lock lips, Lowen notices blood on her mouth and realises that something even more sinister is happening. It is not Jeremy she is kissing, but Verity. Lowen leans back and shrieks in sheer horror.

Later in the trailer, Johnson says “This place is insane,” as she appears to hook up with Verity’s husband — all while Verity appears to be observing. “This is your final warning: only darkness ahead,” Verity says at the end of the trailer.

The trailer leans heavily into the book’s central tension: who is telling the truth? Who is the monster? And is Verity as incapacitated as she appears?

The Official Synopsis

The seductive psychological thriller follows renowned author Verity Crawford (Hathaway) and Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity. After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy (Hartnett), and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality.

Hathaway plays the mysterious ailing author Verity Crawford, Josh Hartnett plays her husband Jeremy Crawford, and Dakota Johnson plays a young writer named Lowen Ashleigh hired to finish Verity’s books. But is Verity really unable to move or speak? Or is something more sinister at play?

Call Her Daddy podcast host Alex Cooper is reportedly making a cameo in the film.

After garnering attention from the BookTok community on TikTok, Grand Central Publishing acquired the rights to it in 2021. Verity has since become one of Hoover’s most dissected books — in no small part because of its unreliable narrators, violence, disturbing revelations, graphic sex scenes and divisive ending.

Verity marks the next adaptation from Hoover’s book universe following the success of It Ends With Us, Regretting You and Reminders of Him.

The CinemaCon trailer began with Verity appearing on Call Her Daddy in all her glory — cutting to Lowen arriving at the stunning Crawford mansion, going through Verity’s closet before being brought to meet Verity as she sits incapacitated in a wheelchair.

The official full-length trailer unveiled on August 11, 2026 goes deeper and darker than the CinemaCon cut — leaning into the psychological horror elements of the book and teasing the moral ambiguity at the heart of the story in a way that has sent social media into overdrive.
