Anne Hathaway’s Mother Mary (2026) Ending Explained — Did She Try to Kill Herself & What Does the Red Spirit Really Mean?

David Lowery’s Mother Mary is one of 2026’s most haunting A24 releases — and its ending leaves most viewers with more questions than answers. Here’s the full breakdown of what actually happened, what the red spirit means, and whether Mother Mary survived.

What Is Mother Mary About?

Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance. Rotten Tomatoes

Directed by David Lowery, the film is a script about emotion more than action — exploring how art and fashion shape each other in the mystical world of true artistry, as Mary insists Sam create the ultimate dress for her comeback show. Roger Ebert

The Red Spirit — What Does It Mean?

The red spirit is one of the film’s only openly supernatural elements, serving as a visual metaphor for the emotional states of both women. Sam compares her love for Mary to a broken tooth, saying the red spirit left her the night after she saw Mary perform without her — the moment she moved on.

During a post-show séance in Dublin, a fan (FKA Twigs) conjures a spirit, which uses a stigmata sliced into Mary’s palm as an entrance to her soul — possibly triggering the viral “incident” at the concert. Rolling Stone

Did Mother Mary Try to Kill Herself?

This is the film’s most unsettling question.

Clues and flashbacks reveal that at a recent performance, Mary was on a raised platform when she saw the red spirit. She stepped back from the entity, but she admits to Sam that she isn’t sure if she was aware of how close to the edge she was. She fell and was caught by the neck by her red costume, left hanging above the crowd.

The implication is that Mary may have tried to take her own life — but she is genuinely unsure if it was the red spirit’s influence or a true expression of her sadness and loneliness. Reinforcing this, Mary quietly admits to Sam at one point that she is still contemplating taking her own life, leaving it open-ended whether this comeback show will be her final one. ScreenRant

Mother Mary Ending Explained

Regardless of your interpretation of the spirit, the film ends with Mary seemingly overcoming the darker ideation — her unity with Sam and her apology to her is more heartfelt and genuine than any of her on-stage proclamations.

The ending suggests Mary doesn’t escape the persona — she integrates it. Mary and Sam don’t fix their relationship, but they acknowledge they are permanently linked. Altbollywood

Critical Take

The soundtrack — featuring songs by Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA Twigs — is exceptional. Hathaway lends her own vocals throughout, and both she and Coel deliver captivating performances that are the film’s beating heart, even when the metaphors go over viewers’ heads. ScreenRant
