How Real Madrid Won The La Liga 2023-24 Without Their Starting CBs and Thibaut Courtois

More than two hours had elapsed since the final whistle blew on Real Madrid’s 3-0 triumph over Cadiz on Saturday (4th May). Despite this, some of their players remained inside the Santiago Bernabéu, glued to the TV screens. Official confirmation of their championship victory arrived later, although they had been aware of their impending triumph for quite some time.

The decisive moment came with Girona’s 4-2 win over Barcelona, over 681 kilometers to the northeast, which was confirmed at 8:30 pm on the 34th Saturday of the season. Instead of embarking on a celebratory parade down the Castellana to Cibeles, the team refrained, although fans congregated by the goddess of fertility. With another match against Bayern Munich scheduled for Wednesday night and the title already secured, there were further tasks at hand.

For quite some time, the outcome had been evident. A fortnight prior, Jude Bellingham’s 94th-minute goal secured victory in the clásico, effectively eliminating their last remaining contenders, if Barcelona could truly be called that. Two months earlier, they had convincingly defeated the closest thing they had to genuine challengers, effectively ending Girona’s hopes as well. While they were the most thrilling and surprising team, they wouldn’t claim the championship. As for Atlético Madrid, the only team to defeat Real Madrid all season, they had dropped out of contention even earlier, faltering by Christmas. This wasn’t so much a competitive race as it was a predictable procession.

Real Madrid: A Season of Superiority and Adaptability

The night Girona suffered a 4-0 defeat against Madrid in February, there seemed to be a hint of relief in the words of their manager, Michel Sánchez, as if he had been liberated from a facade, the pressure for the season’s great revelation to replicate a Leicester-like feat. “When you face someone this formidable, you come face to face with your own reality, and this isn’t our league,” he remarked. Instead, it belonged to Madrid, and almost from the outset.

Soccer Football – LaLiga – Real Madrid v Girona – Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain – February 10, 2024 Real Madrid’s Rodrygo walks off the pitch after been substituted by Joselu REUTERS/Isabel Infantes

While this assessment may appear overly simplistic – especially since their early weeks didn’t hint at outright domination – with only four games remaining, their lead stands at an insurmountable 13 points over Girona (14 ahead of Barcelona). Ultimately, they were simply superior, surpassing everyone else, even when they didn’t appear to be at their best.

The word “seem” perhaps holds significance there. Madrid is exceptional. Leading from weeks one to five, eight to 11, and 14 to 19, they reclaimed the top spot in week 21 and never relinquished it. They excel across all significant metrics, outscoring and conceding fewer goals than any other team, completing more passes and dribbles, creating more opportunities, and taking more shots. They boast the highest percentage of tackles won, dominate duels, and maintain the most clean sheets.

There are two types of managers: those who do nothing and those who cause a lot of damage,” remarked Carlo Ancelotti this week. “The game belongs to the players.” And Madrid’s players are exceptional. Ultimately, amidst all the analysis, perhaps it boils down to this fundamental truth. Following the Girona match, Ancelotti suggested Vinícius Júnior was the best in the world. When asked who comes next, he responded, “Bellingham.” And who’s after that? “Rodrygo… Fourth: Kroos… Valverde, Camavinga…” Naturally, there’s bias involved. Yet, as he stated, “being on the bench today felt very comfortable.”

Soccer Football – Real Madrid v RCD Mallorca – Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain – January 3, 2024 Real Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger celebrates scoring their first goal REUTERS/Juan Medina

Classic Ancelotti indeed, his reluctance to center attention on himself being a key aspect of his success. However, there was a certain significance in that. Yet, it wouldn’t be accurate to say he has done nothing. Instead, he has diligently focused on identifying solutions, quietly working behind the scenes. Within this squad, there are numerous avenues for success, and Ancelotti has adeptly navigated them.

Resilience: Madrid’s Heroes to the Brink of Glory

In the 3-0 victory over Cadiz last Saturday, marking Madrid’s 27th win and bringing them within touching distance of the title, Thibaut Courtois returned to the starting lineup in goal, making a crucial save when the score was 0-0. It was his first appearance of the season following a cruciate ligament injury, an entire campaign endured without the services of the world’s best goalkeeper. Initial doubts surrounding Andriy Lunin prompted Madrid to hastily secure the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, it was Lunin who emerged as the first-choice keeper, with only two goalkeepers boasting a higher save percentage.

Meanwhile, Éder Militão made only his third start against Cadiz, with David Alaba yet to return from his own knee injury. Ancelotti referred to their center-back injuries as a “world record,” but swiftly moved past it without it derailing their campaign. In their absence, Antonio Rüdiger has emerged as Spain’s standout defender. Aurélien Tchouaméni, despite his discomfort, has excelled when deployed at center-back, as has Dani Carvajal. Lucas Vázquez and Eduardo Camavinga have also impressed when filling in at full-back.

Soccer Football – LaLiga – Real Madrid v Cadiz – Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain – May 4, 2024 Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois makes a save from Cadiz’s Chris Ramos REUTERS/Juan Medina

Toni Kroos, who appeared to be on the verge of departure, has arguably been the country’s standout player in a restructured midfield. Despite being rested against Cadiz, he has completed 1,999 passes and provided seven assists. With Karim Benzema’s unexpected departure a year earlier than Kylian Mbappé’s arrival, Ancelotti ingeniously devised a new role, somewhat akin to a striker, for Jude Bellingham.

The English international emerged as the league’s top scorer in the first half of the season. While he has experienced a slowdown since February and faced frustrations, he remains just one goal behind Artem Dovbyk. Joselu and Brahim were the goalscorers on the day Madrid sealed the title, with their contributions proving pivotal, tallying nine and six goals respectively.

Despite recent frustrations, the spotlight in this league belongs to Bellingham, who has directly contributed to 22 goals. However, the success has been collective. Vinícius faced challenges with injuries and has only started 20 league games, with his season truly kicking into gear in January, yet he has managed to score 13 goals and provide five assists. Rodrygo initially had doubts but has contributed 10 goals and five assists. Fede Valverde has logged the most minutes of any player, with Ancelotti’s only critique being his lack of arrogance. Nonetheless, the coach has welcomed that trait in others, embracing the absences that others might have complained about.

Soccer Football – LaLiga – FC Barcelona v Real Madrid – Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona, Spain – October 28, 2023 Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham scores their second goal REUTERS/Albert Gea

In times of difficulty, emergency and need, the commitment is higher,” he said.

Overcoming Early Hurdles to Reign Supreme

At the start of the season, success for Madrid seemed anything but assured. However, they navigated their way to victories. They began with a 2-0 triumph at San Mamés against Athletic, the only team to conquer that ground this season. This was followed by a 3-1 win over Almería, who are on track to become the second-worst team in La Liga history, and a narrow 1-0 victory against Celta.

Bellingham found the net in each of these matches, and again against Getafe, securing a dramatic 94th-minute winner in his home debut. While Madrid didn’t entirely convince, their loss to Atlético in week six served as a reality check, exposing their flaws. However, Ancelotti made adjustments, notably closing the gap on the left flank, and they didn’t suffer another defeat thereafter.

When the stakes were highest, Madrid elevated their game, extinguishing any hopes their rivals may have harbored. Girona’s rise was the season’s narrative, yet Madrid comfortably dispatched them with a 3-0 victory in late September. While it may have been somewhat flattering, it underscored their dominance. They secured wins over Barcelona twice, with Bellingham clinching late winners on both occasions.

Soccer Football – LaLiga – Real Madrid v Athletic Bilbao – Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain – March 31, 2024 Real Madrid’s Rodrygo scores their first goal REUTERS/Violeta Santos Moura

Following their first Clásico triumph, they were held to a goalless draw by Rayo Vallecano, their sole failure to find the net, before embarking on a run of 10 wins in 11 games. Atlético briefly halted their momentum, offering a glimmer of hope for Girona before being thrashed 4-0 at the Bernabéu. The aggregate score against the only other genuine title contenders: 7-0.

Week after week, Madrid found a way to prevail until they stood head and shoulders above the competition. As the two nearest challengers, who couldn’t truly challenge them, squared off on Saturday night, Girona emerged victorious, clinching a historic Champions League spot. However, the true winners of the night, and the year, had already concluded their match, merely watching and waiting for confirmation of what they had long known to be inevitable.

How Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. Has Become Mr. Champions League After CR7?

At the conclusion of Tuesday night’s intense 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid’s press officer swiftly located Vinicius Junior on the field and handed him a training top.

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football – Champions League – Semi Final – First Leg – Bayern Munich v Real Madrid – Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany – April 30, 2024 Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior celebrates scoring their second goal REUTERS/Angelika Warmuth/File Photo

With the Brazilian partially unclothed after swapping shirts with Bayern substitute Bryan Zaragoza, it seemed as though the visitors were concerned about him catching a cold. This precaution was due to Madrid’s imperative to safeguard their star player, who had just rescued them with two crucial goals in this first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

Vinicius achieved this feat while playing as a forward, on a night when the 14-time European Cup/Champions League champions were up against Harry Kane, the striker their coach Carlo Ancelotti had unsuccessfully pursued the previous summer.

Madrid’s pursuit of Kane did not progress beyond exploration, and the England captain ultimately joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur. Instead, Ancelotti’s squad secured the services of Joselu, then 33 years old, on loan, a player who had recently experienced relegation with Espanyol. In a season plagued by injuries that have depleted both his defensive and offensive ranks, the Italian coach has honed his skills in navigating adversity.

In the initial segment, he innovated a new role for Jude Bellingham, another summer acquisition, who netted 17 goals in 21 matches before the Christmas hiatus. In the latter part, he has been instrumental in elevating Vinicius Jr to new heights, gradually refining his positioning and even molding him into a leader of Madrid’s attacking unit.

Vinicius Jr’s opening goal last night showcased the instincts of a seasoned striker: a shrewd run to exploit space behind the defense, followed by a composed finish past the advancing Manuel Neuer. The Brazilian celebrated by dashing to the corner flag, planting a kiss on the Madrid crest adorning his jersey, performing a jubilant dance, and extending his arms in a manner reminiscent of Bellingham’s post-goal rituals, before returning to the pitch.

Upon returning, he paid homage to Toni Kroos, drawing near to whom more than half of their teammates had already congregated. Playing on his former turf, Kroos orchestrated a moment of brilliance with his through ball for the goal, though he downplayed his contribution afterward.

A lot of credit to Vini, he offered me the pass with his movement. As I know him, he always goes into space. The pass wasn’t that special,” Kroos said.

We train a lot together and we know each other very well,” said Vinicius Jr, who became only the fourth man in Champions League history to score in three straight semi-final legs.

However, Madrid’s start to the game was anything but promising; it was quite poor. Ancelotti’s frustration was palpable, bordering on fury.

In the 10th minute, he turned to his son and assistant coach Davide, gesturing with four fingers to express his discontent with the frequency of possession turnovers by their players. Substitutes Eder Militao and Dani Ceballos rose from the bench, adding their voices to the direction and encouragement directed towards the players on the field.

The mood shifted abruptly about 15 minutes later when Kroos and Vinicius Jr orchestrated the opening goal with a devastatingly simple move. Kroos received the ball in midfield and promptly identified the next course of action, signaling to his teammate. Vinicius Jr comprehended Kroos’ instructions and executed them flawlessly. It was a sudden turnaround. Bayern found themselves caught off guard, although their head coach Thomas Tuchel had seemingly foreseen the possibility.

If you look at their goals or their chances and rewind 10 seconds, you don’t see them coming,” Tuchel said before the game.

Vinicius Jr: Leading Real Madrid’s Resilience In Champions League

In the second half, Bayern mounted a strong comeback, with Leroy Sane’s powerful strike causing chaos. On the sidelines, Ancelotti reprimanded Vinicius Jr and Aurelien Tchouameni. Just four minutes later, as Kane prepared to take the penalty that propelled the home side to a 2-1 lead, with international teammate Bellingham attempting to disrupt him, Vinicius Jr had another brief discussion with the Ancelottis.

As he has demonstrated numerous times in the past, the Brazilian spearheaded the defiance on the grand stage.

Madrid refused to surrender, as they consistently do. Their fans, numbering 4,000 in the away section at the Allianz Arena, rallied behind them, chanting “Hasta el final, vamos Real!” (“Until the end, let’s go Real!”), treating the match as if it were a final.

In the 83rd minute, when Vinicius Jr’s skillful play set up Rodrygo in the box, there was no question about who would take the penalty after Rodrygo was fouled. Vinicius Jr had converted from the spot against Barcelona in El Clasico just nine days earlier, and he assumed the responsibility once more. Lucas Vazquez retrieved the ball and shielded his teammate from a couple of Bayern players attempting to disrupt him.

Vinicius Jr placed the ball meticulously, wiping the sweat from his face with his shirt amidst the thunderous roar of the crowd.

Despite the pressure, Madrid’s Brazilian star navigated through with ease, repeatedly finding the back of the net and celebrating each goal with a trip to the corner. Despite objects being hurled from the stands, he punctuated the moment by gesturing to the No 7 on his back, the same number worn for so long by his idol Cristiano Ronaldo during his tenure at Madrid.

By converting that penalty past Neuer, he notched up 32 goal contributions (21 goals and 11 assists) for Madrid this season, edging ahead of Bellingham by one.

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football – LaLiga – FC Barcelona v Real Madrid – Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona, Spain – October 28, 2023 Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior reacts REUTERS/Albert Gea/File Photo

According to data from Opta, since the beginning of the 2021-22 season, he has been directly involved in more Champions League goals than any other player (31 in total; 16 goals and 15 assists).

This is Vinicius Jr, a complete player whose evolution has been so profound that he could easily fulfill the role of the striker Ancelotti had sought last summer.

I’m very happy to be able to score two goals,” he said from the touchline after the game, having been named player of the match. “Now it’s time for a magical night at home.”

It encapsulated the achievement of Ancelotti, his coaching team, and Vinicius Jr — from conceiving a solution to addressing a void, to nurturing it meticulously until a left-winger could emerge as the standout player in a Champions League semi-final away fixture while operating as a forward.

Now he has learned to move well without the ball, moving at the back of the rivals,” Ancelotti said. “And then he’s very cold in front of the goal.”

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: Match Preview

Following their elimination of Premier League title contenders Arsenal and Manchester City in the previous round, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are set to clash in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

This encounter marks the eighth meeting between Bayern and Madrid in a semi-final of the European Cup/Champions League. While Bayern had advanced from four out of the first five encounters between 1976 and 2012, they were eliminated in the last two (2013-14 and 2017-18).

In their journey to this stage, Joshua Kimmich’s second-half header proved decisive in securing a 1-0 victory against Arsenal in the second leg. This smart finish by the Bayern midfielder ensured a 3-2 aggregate victory for Thomas Tuchel’s team in the quarter-finals.

Madrid’s path to progression was somewhat more straightforward compared to Bayern’s, as Carlo Ancelotti’s team advanced after a penalty shootout victory over last season’s champions, Manchester City. Rodrygo initiated the scoring at the Etihad Stadium, but Kevin De Bruyne’s goal leveled the aggregate score to 4-4, leading to the necessity of a penalty shootout.

Jude Bellingham demonstrated immense effort in that hard-fought victory against Pep Guardiola’s squad, maintaining an average of 1.2 high-intensity pressures per minute on the field (146 overall). This stands as the highest average recorded by a player who played 90+ minutes in a match in this season’s competition.

Bellingham is anticipated to cover even more ground in the upcoming match on Tuesday, as he currently leads the Champions League this season for high-intensity pressures with 496. Additionally, Bellingham has showcased his versatility with four goals and as many assists in UEFA’s premier club tournament this term.

Among Madrid’s ranks, only Rodrygo surpasses Bellingham’s goal tally in the Champions League this season, having scored five times in European competition. The Brazilian talent continues to impress alongside his international and club teammate, Vinícius Júnior, bolstering Madrid’s attacking prowess.

Rodrygo and Vinicius were both absent from the starting lineup as Carlo Ancelotti opted to rest his key players in Friday’s 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad. Arda Güler seized the opportunity to shine, scoring on his first league start for the La Liga leaders in the away triumph against La Real. Additionally, Éder Militão marked a promising return from injury.

Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba will be sidelined due to injury, while Dani Carvajal will miss the match due to suspension following his caution against Manchester City.

Aurélien Tchouaméni will be back in contention after serving a suspension in the quarter-final second leg. However, there are concerns over the fitness of Ferland Mendy, who was sidelined for the win against Real Sociedad as a precaution due to a reported muscle strain.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich will be without Kingsley Coman, Sacha Boey, Bouna Sarr, and Tarek Buchmann. Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry were not included in the lineup on Saturday, as the team opted for a much-changed roster, securing a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

All Goals of Harry Kane, Image Credits- Opta Analyst

Harry Kane delivered a decisive double at Allianz Arena in that Bundesliga encounter, bringing his career goal tally for club and country to 400, alongside a personal-best of 42 goals in all competitions this season. The former Tottenham striker will have another milestone within reach come kick-off in the midweek fixture.

Kane has been directly involved in 10 goals in as many games in this season’s Champions League. Adding another goal or assist here would see him surpass David Beckham (in 1998-99 and 2001-02) and Steven Gerrard (2007-08) for the most goal involvements by an English player in a single campaign in the competition.

Regardless of whether Kane can propel the Bundesliga giants to the Champions League final against either Paris Saint-Germain or Borussia Dortmund, Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel is set to depart at the end of the season. He will undoubtedly aim to conclude his tenure on a high note.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: Head-to-head

This fixture holds the record for being the most played in the history of the European Cup/Champions League, with 26 encounters, 24 of which occurred in the knockout stages – also marking the highest number of matches between two sides in the competition’s history.

Recently, Real Madrid has dominated this clash, remaining unbeaten in the last seven meetings and claiming victory in six of those encounters, with one draw. This represents Bayern’s longest winless streak against any opponent in European competition.

Furthermore, Los Blancos have triumphed in each of their last three away matches against Bayern Munich (4-0 in 2013-14, 2-1 in 2016-17, and 2-1 in 2017-18), marking the longest winning streak away to Bayern in the European Cup/Champions League. No other team has achieved consecutive away victories against Bayern in this competition.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: Recent Form

Bayern Munich has been formidable at home in the Champions League, having lost just one of their last 24 home games (winning 20 and drawing 3). They are currently on a 15-match unbeaten streak at home (12 wins and 3 draws), with their last defeat at home in the competition dating back to April 2021 against Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite missing out on the Bundesliga title for the first time in 12 years, with Bayer Leverkusen claiming the trophy, Bayern has been in good form lately, winning their last three games in all competitions.

Real Madrid remains unbeaten in the Champions League this season, having won 7 matches and drawn 3. Their current 10-game unbeaten run in the competition is impressive, with only one instance of a longer unbeaten streak within a single campaign, when they went 11 games without defeat on their way to winning the 2016-17 edition.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: Team News and Predicted Line-up

Video Suggests Lamine Yamal’s Goal Crossed Line in Barcelona’s El Clasico Loss to Real Madrid Amid Goal-Line Technology Debate

A fresh perspective on Lamine Yamal’s controversial goal for Barcelona against Real Madrid has surfaced. LaLiga faced criticism during Sunday’s El Clasico clash at the Bernabeu when the 16-year-old appeared to score for the Catalans with a flick from a corner.

Controversy Reigns: LaLiga’s Goal-Line Technology Debate and Yamal’s Disputed Goal

At the time, the match was tied at 1-1, but LaLiga does not employ goal-line technology. Consequently, the referee allowed play to continue, and VAR couldn’t definitively determine if the ball had crossed the line, as only two angles were available for review.

Another angle of Yamal’s goal shout:

However, a new perspective on the disputed goal emerged in a clip shared on Reddit, suggesting that the ball did indeed cross the goal-line.

In the video, Real’s goalkeeper Lunin can be seen positioned inside the goal, desperately attempting to clear the ball, yet the goal was not awarded.

LaLiga’s approach to goal-line technology differs from leagues like the Premier League, where such incidents can be swiftly resolved with officials receiving immediate signals on their watches indicating whether the ball crossed the line or not.

According to Spanish outlet El Larguero, La Liga president Javier Tebas has reportedly refused to allocate the £2.6 million needed for goal-line technology.

Fans expressed disbelief that Yamal’s goal was not awarded, but Tebas promptly defended La Liga’s decision to forego such technology.

LaLiga President’s Response and Xavi’s Frustration: Refereeing Controversy Overshadows Barcelona’s Loss

The LaLiga president shared a series of articles highlighting instances where goal-line technology has failed, including the infamous phantom goal from Sheffield United’s Premier League match against Aston Villa in 2020. Alongside the images, Tebas wrote ‘no comment’ in a clear response to the criticism.

Meanwhile, Barcelona coach Xavi expressed frustration at yet another perceived refereeing error following Lamal’s controversial goal.

He stated that he wouldn’t comment on the referee to avoid being banned, but he emphasized that the situation was evident to everyone. Xavi asserted that their team was superior that night and deserved the victory. Xavi also criticized the referee, claiming that not a single decision made was correct, labeling it as a disgrace and urging against remaining silent about it. He expressed his initial hope that the referee would either stay inconspicuous or make accurate decisions, but neither of these scenarios occurred.

I’m not going to say anything about the referee because I will be banned if I do but it was there for all to see,’ he said. ‘We were the better team tonight and we deserved to win.’

The referee did not get a single decision right. It’s a disgrace and we should not remain silent.’

I hoped the referee would either go unnoticed or get his decisions right but it was neither of those two things.’

Lamal’s contentious goal proved costly for Barcelona. Despite taking the lead in the second half with a goal from Fermin Lopez, Real Madrid’s Lucas Vazquez equalized, and Jude Bellingham secured a last-minute victory.

As a result, the LaLiga title race appears to be effectively settled, with Real Madrid extending their lead to 11 points with only six games remaining, putting them on course for a record-extending 36th domestic championship.

La Liga 2023-24: Real Madrid vs Barcelona- Preview & Prediction | When and Where to Watch the El Classico LIVE in India?

As these Spanish powerhouses emerge from contrasting experiences in the Champions League, they are set to collide in La Liga on Sunday. With anticipation building, we offer our prediction and preview for the upcoming El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona: Match Preview

Both of these La Liga powerhouses experienced a week of ups and downs. Barcelona seemed poised for the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after Raphinha’s goal put them 1-0 ahead against Paris Saint-Germain at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, leading 4-2 on aggregate. However, Ronald Araújo’s dismissal changed the momentum, with PSG, led by Kylian Mbappé, rallying to secure a 4-1 victory on the night, eliminating Xavi’s team from the competition.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid faced a daunting challenge in the second leg of their quarter-final against defending champions Manchester City. Despite a hard-fought 1-1 draw in England, the match went to penalties, where Andriy Lunin emerged as the hero, propelling Madrid to the semi-finals at the expense of former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola. This victory sets up a semi-final encounter with another of Guardiola’s former clubs, Bayern Munich.

On Sunday, at the Santiago Bernabéu, two teams with differing morale will face off as Carlo Ancelotti’s squad aims to solidify their position at the top of La Liga, while Barcelona seeks to reassert themselves in the title race.

With only seven league matches left in Spain, there’s an eight-point gap between these two teams leading up to the upcoming Clásico. A victory for Real Madrid at home would likely extinguish Barcelona’s hopes of defending their title. Conversely, a win for Xavi’s team would narrow the gap to just five points, revitalizing their chances in the race for the championship.

La Liga Table As It Stands After Match Day 31, Image Credits- Opta Analyst

The visitors face a daunting challenge considering Real Madrid’s unbeaten streak in 90-minute matches across all competitions since their sixth league fixture of the season, a 3-1 loss to Atlético Madrid back in September.

Los Blancos currently lead La Liga convincingly, boasting the highest number of goals scored (67) and the fewest conceded (20). Their goal tally could have been even higher if not for hitting the woodwork on 16 occasions in the league this season, marking their highest count since the 2020-21 campaign (22). Interestingly, Barcelona shares the same number of woodwork hits (16), making them joint leaders in this statistic alongside Athletic Club.

Barcelona’s season has lacked the consistency expected of defending champions until recently, when they surged into second place after overtaking Girona. It wasn’t until Xavi’s team embarked on a 13-game unbeaten streak across all competitions (winning 10, drawing 3) following his announcement to step down at the end of the season, following their humbling 5-3 defeat to Villarreal in January. However, their recent loss to PSG, influenced significantly by Araújo’s early dismissal, disrupted their momentum.

If Barcelona manages to score on Sunday, it will mark the club’s 300th goal against Real Madrid in the history of La Liga. The 100th goal was scored back in January 1962 by Sándor Kocsis in a 3-1 victory at the Camp Nou, while Ronaldo was the scorer of the 200th goal in May 1997, also in a home win for Barcelona, this time with a 1-0 scoreline.

In the reverse fixture, Jude Bellingham netted Madrid’s 300th and 301st La Liga goals against Barcelona. He has the opportunity to create further history if he proves to be a thorn in Barcelona’s side once again, reminiscent of his performance at Montjuïc in October when Madrid clinched a 2-1 comeback victory. Bellingham scored both goals on that occasion and could join the ranks of Ruud van Nistelrooy (2006-07) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2014-15) as the third Madrid player to score in both matches against Barcelona in the same La Liga season in the 21st century.

Soccer Football – LaLiga – FC Barcelona v Real Madrid – Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona, Spain – October 28, 2023 Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga in action with FC Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo REUTERS/Albert Gea

Undoubtedly, Bellingham won’t be the sole young talent on display on Sunday. Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, substituted early against PSG to accommodate Iñigo Martínez after Araújo’s red card, showcased his prowess with a superb assist for Raphinha’s goal. Therefore, he should be highly motivated to leave his mark in this encounter.

Yamal has featured twice against Real Madrid across all competitions, but this upcoming match could mark the teenager’s first start. At just 16 years and 283 days old, the winger stands to become the second-youngest player to start a Clásico in La Liga history, narrowly missing out on the record by a mere three days, set by Vicente Martínez in October 1941 when he started for Barcelona against their arch-rivals at the age of 16 years and 280 days.

Unless there’s a significant change of heart, something he has repeatedly ruled out, this Clásico will likely be Xavi’s final one as Barcelona manager. Out of his nine encounters against Real Madrid across all competitions, he has won four and lost five. Xavi will aim to improve this record, especially considering that among all managers who have overseen at least six Clásicos, he holds the highest percentage of defeats, standing at 56%.

In terms of team updates, Aurelien Tchouaméni is expected to return to the lineup for Madrid after serving a suspension during the win against Manchester City. However, Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba remain sidelined with long-term injuries.

Similarly, Barcelona continues to contend with injuries, with Alejandro Balde and Gavi still sidelined due to long-term injuries.

    Real Madrid vs Barcelona: Head-to-head

In their recent head-to-head encounters, Real Madrid has emerged victorious in their last three meetings with Barcelona across all competitions, including two clashes this season. This feat of winning three Clásico matches in a single campaign has only been achieved by Madrid on four previous occasions. The most recent instance was in the 2012-2013 season under José Mourinho, when they faced each other six times, winning three, drawing two, and losing one.

In the reverse fixture, Jude Bellingham’s double propelled Los Blancos to a 2-1 victory after Ilkay Gündogan’s early goal for Barcelona. The England midfielder sealed the win with a dramatic 92nd-minute winner, securing another notable chapter in the storied rivalry between these two clubs.

In the Supercopa de España final in January, Real Madrid secured a comfortable 4-1 victory over Barcelona, with Vinícius Júnior’s hat-trick paving the way for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Despite Robert Lewandowski pulling one back for Barcelona between Vinícius’ second and third goals, Madrid maintained control, with Rodrygo adding a fourth to seal the win.

Barcelona can draw some encouragement from their recent away record against Madrid, having won 10 out of their last 18 away games in all competitions (with one draw and seven losses). This includes their most recent victory, a 1-0 triumph in the Copa del Rey semi-finals last season. Remarkably, this recent run of success equals the number of away wins Barcelona achieved in their previous 48 encounters against their Clásico rivals.

Recent El Classico Results, Image Credits- Opta Analyst

The history of El Clásico has seen a total of 600 La Liga goals scored, with Real Madrid narrowly leading 301-299. Only two other La Liga fixtures have witnessed more goals in the competition’s history: Barcelona vs Athletic Club (611) and Real Madrid vs Athletic Club (610).

Real Madrid vs Barcelona: Recent Form

Real Madrid has been in exceptional form since their defeat to Atlético Madrid, remaining unbeaten in their last 25 La Liga matches (with 19 wins and 6 draws). This streak marks their longest unbeaten run in a single campaign in the competition since the 1989-1990 season, where they went undefeated for 28 games (with 20 wins and 8 draws).

Furthermore, Madrid has won their last four La Liga fixtures and has kept clean sheets in their last four home matches at the Santiago Bernabéu. In their recent away fixture against Mallorca, they secured a 1-0 victory, with Aurelien Tchouaméni scoring the decisive goal.

On the other hand, Barcelona has also been enjoying a solid run of form, remaining unbeaten in their last 10 La Liga matches (with 8 wins and 2 draws). Impressively, they have kept clean sheets in their last six outings. The last league fixture saw them secure a 1-0 win against Cadiz, with João Félix netting the solitary goal.

Soccer Football – Spanish Super Cup – Final – Real Madrid v FC Barcelona – Al-Awwal Stadium, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – January 14, 2024 Real Madrid’s Rodrygo celebrates scoring their fourth goal REUTERS/Juan Medina

It’s worth noting that Barcelona’s current streak of consecutive clean sheets is their longest since October 2014 under the management of Luis Enrique, during which they recorded seven clean sheets in a row (with 7 wins and 1 draw).

Real Madrid vs Barcelona: Team News and Predicted Line-up

Both Real Madrid and Barcelona appear to have relatively clean injury sheets as they gear up for what could be a pivotal El Clásico in the La Liga title race on Sunday. Expect both sides to field near full-strength line-ups for what promises to be an intense showdown.

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr and Dani Carvajal are expected to be fit for the clash after sustaining minor knocks that led to their substitutions during extra time in their recent match. Aurelien Tchouameni, who missed the match against Manchester City due to suspension, returns to the lineup after a week of rest.

Barcelona, on the other hand, had Sergi Roberto and Andreas Christensen sidelined due to suspension in their last outing. While Ronald Araujo has been a key figure in defense this season, his red card in the previous match might influence the team’s decision regarding his selection.

    Real Madrid Predicted Line-up:

    • Goalkeeper: Lunin
    • Defenders: Carvajal, Nacho, Rüdiger, Mendy
    • Midfielders: Tchouameni, Kroos, Valverde, Bellingham
    • Forwards: Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr

    Barcelona Predicted Line-up:

    • Goalkeeper: Ter Stegen
    • Defenders: Koundé, Araujo, Cubarsí, Cancelo
    • Midfielders: Gündoğan, Christensen, De Jong
    • Forwards: Lamal, Lewandowski, Raphinha

    Injury Concerns

Real Madrid: David Alaba, Thibaut Courtois

    Barcelona: Alejandro Balde, Gav

Real Madrid vs Barcelona: Match Prediction

Real Madrid holds a significant advantage in the La Liga title race, and a victory in the upcoming El Clásico would extend their lead to 11 points at the top of the table.

On the other hand, a win for Barcelona would narrow the gap to just five points, offering them a glimmer of hope to mount a late challenge for the title.

Considering Real Madrid’s impressive form and the home ground advantage they possess, our prediction leans towards them securing the victory in this crucial encounter.

Tactical Analysis: How Real Madrid Defended Manchester City And Stayed Alive For 120 Minutes

Manchester City extended their unbeaten home streak in the Champions League to 31 games (at least in 90 minutes). However, their impressive record was overshadowed by Real Madrid’s victory, dealing another blow to Pep Guardiola’s team.

Under the leadership of Carlo Ancelotti, the seasoned champions once again demonstrated their prowess in the competition. The outcome emphasized Real Madrid’s ability to withstand Manchester City’s aggressive play and emerge triumphant.

Real Madrid’s Resilience and City’s Persistence

Following a lively 3-3 draw in the initial encounter, seizing the lead in the rematch eased any apprehension lingering from Madrid’s 4-0 defeat last season. A blend of a speculative long pass, trademark Madrid precision, and a stroke of luck allowed Rodrygo to secure a pivotal advantage for his team. It was a lead that the visitors fiercely defended throughout the match.

City maintained possession dominance while Madrid adopted a deep defensive stance with disciplined numbers. It wasn’t until the 76th minute that City’s persistent probing yielded results, with Kevin De Bruyne scoring a well-deserved equalizer. However, De Bruyne missed a golden opportunity to put his team ahead as the game approached extra time and the possibility of penalties, marking yet another impressive outcome for Ancelotti and Real Madrid.

Real Madrid’s Tactical Adaptations and Dynamic Play

Ancelotti implemented slight tactical adjustments for Real Madrid compared to the first leg. Initially set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Vinícius Júnior operated centrally, posing a threat behind Manchester City’s central defenders. This positioning facilitated better connections with teammates on the right flank compared to the previous encounter. Both full-backs and wide midfielders provided width around City’s defensive structure.

Jude Bellingham started as the number 10 but dropped deeper to link up with the center-backs and the double pivot of Toni Kroos and Eduardo Camavinga. They ensured defensive coverage by individually shifting wide to cover the spaces left by Ferland Mendy and Dani Carvajal’s forward movements.

Real Madrid also executed intelligent longer passes into the spaces behind City’s defense, with Bellingham making forward runs to support Vinícius. Fede Valverde operated as a right-winger while Rodrygo occupied the left flank. The visitors initiated short build-up play along the backline to draw City players forward before launching balls in behind, as observed in the lead-up to their sole goal of the match.

Carvajal’s delivery found Bellingham, who combined with Valverde and a more centrally positioned Vinícius to assist Rodrygo’s goal. Following the goal, Real shifted into a low defensive block for the remainder of the first half.

Guardiola’s Adjustments and Akanji’s Impact on City’s Attack

Guardiola once again deployed Manchester City in their familiar attacking shape of 3-2-4-1, derived from a nominal 4-3-3 setup. Manuel Akanji shifted from central defense to a double pivot alongside Rodri. Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne operated as the two attacking midfielders, closely shadowed by Kroos and Camavinga from Real Madrid, potentially influencing Real’s choice of the 4-2-3-1 formation for the match. Jack Grealish and Phil Foden engaged in frequent one-on-one battles against Real Madrid’s aggressive full-backs, while Erling Haaland focused on challenging Nacho whenever possible.

Akanji being the free man in the City midfield against Real Madrid, Image Credits- Wyscout

To counteract Madrid’s deep defensive block, City’s wingers started dropping deeper to receive the ball and evade the tight marking from Carvajal and Mendy. Despite this adjustment, Real’s full-backs continued to track their movements, and Madrid’s pivots maintained close surveillance on De Bruyne and Silva. This left Akanji as the free player, often positioned to receive passes behind Real Madrid’s midfield trio and connect with City’s forward line.

Akanji’s positioning in the double pivot on the right side of the pitch added potency to City’s attacks down that flank. With defenders preoccupied by Foden’s dribbling and De Bruyne’s runs, Akanji exploited the spaces between the lines and surged forward. As Mendy aggressively closed down Foden, De Bruyne capitalized on the resulting space behind. Conversely, the City left flank saw less activity, with Carvajal receiving a booking during one of the few occasions when Grealish gained the upper hand in a one-on-one duel.

    City’s Left-Side Dominance and Real’s Defensive Resilience

In the second half, Manchester City intensified their attacks on the left side, capitalizing on Carvajal’s cautious approach towards Grealish due to his booking. This allowed City to exploit space behind Carvajal and generate dangerous situations with penetrative runs from Silva. De Bruyne, Haaland, and Foden positioned themselves to capitalize on crosses from this area, with Akanji providing additional support by shifting across.

Real Madrid’s Low block without the Ball, Image Credits- Wyscout

Despite City’s dominance in possession and territory, Real Madrid defended resolutely with a back six. Kroos dropped deeper to protect the left inside channel, enabling Mendy to mark City’s wide attacker on that side. Valverde provided cover on the right, ensuring additional protection around Carvajal, who guarded access to the inside channel. Camavinga and Bellingham screened the defense, while Vinícius and Rodrygo served as counter-attacking outlets. Real Madrid’s commitment to this deep defensive block was evident, as their only shot on target came in the 12th minute, coinciding with their goal.

Doku’s pace and unpredictability caused Carvajal and Real Madrid problems which ultimately led to City’s equaliser, Image Credits- Wyscout

Throughout the second half and extra time, City continued to apply pressure, amassing a total of 32 shots and 18 corners. They eventually equalized after Jérémy Doku replaced Grealish, providing a more aggressive threat against Carvajal. Doku’s cross led to a poor clearance, resulting in De Bruyne’s goal.

City’s converted back three positioned themselves high to thwart potential counter-attacks and confine Real Madrid deep in their defensive third. Despite De Bruyne missing a golden opportunity to win the tie, City couldn’t find the breakthrough, and Real Madrid emerged victorious after a tense penalty shootout.

What The Managers Had To Say After The Match

Congratulations to Real Madrid – they defended so deep with incredible solidarity,” said Guardiola. “We did everything, defensively and offensively. They made a good goal. There were two, three, four transitions, but it is normal at that level with the quality they have. We played exceptionally in all departments. Unfortunately, we could not win.”

There was only one way to get out of here alive,” said Ancelotti. “We did well to score early on and then we showed the commitment to defend the lead. We defended well, we had to dig in and fight hard. We could have played better, but the team were defensively superb.”

Manchester City vs Real Madrid: Match Preview

Manchester City had a remarkable weekend, securing a dominant 5-1 victory over Luton Town on Saturday to claim the top spot in the Premier League standings. This triumph was further bolstered by defeats for Liverpool and Arsenal on Sunday, which enhanced City’s prospects of maintaining their lead.

Their journey towards potentially achieving back-to-back trebles continues with the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday. City aims to replicate last season’s success by eliminating Real Madrid for the second consecutive year and cementing their status as favorites for another European title.

In the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu last week, City narrowly missed out on a decisive victory, ending in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Federico Valverde’s late goal for Madrid. Despite leading twice during the match thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, and Josko Gvardiol, City couldn’t secure a lead to take back to the Etihad Stadium.

However, City remains confident in their chances of progressing, given Madrid’s historical struggles in Champions League knockout ties after failing to win the first leg at home. City themselves have experience in this situation, having defeated Madrid 4-0 at the Etihad in last year’s semi-finals.

Bernardo Silva, who scored twice in last year’s encounter, has a strong record against Madrid, with four goals in seven career games against them. Additionally, Phil Foden is expected to return to the lineup after scoring in each of his last five Champions League starts.

Soccer Football – Champions League – Quarter Final – First Leg – Real Madrid v Manchester City – Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain – April 9, 2024 Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol scores their third goal pass Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin REUTERS/Juan Medina

City’s lineup faces no new concerns, with Ederson returning from injury and John Stones potentially featuring after missing the weekend’s game. Despite City’s favoritism, they remain wary of Madrid’s resilience, especially considering Madrid’s memorable comeback in the 2021-22 semi-finals.

Rodrygo, who scored against City last week, remains a threat for Madrid, although he missed their weekend fixture due to injury. Madrid will also be without Aurélien Tchouaméni due to suspension, posing a selection dilemma for manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti is likely to rely on the experience of players like Toni Kroos, who has excelled under pressure in the Champions League this season. Madrid’s resilience and ability to stay competitive throughout matches make them formidable opponents for City, who must remain vigilant throughout the encounter.

Manchester City vs Real Madrid: Head-to-Head

In anticipation of Wednesday’s match between Manchester City and Real Madrid, brace yourself for an abundance of goal-scoring opportunities. Over the last five Champions League encounters between these two teams, a total of 23 goals have been scored, averaging 4.6 goals per game.

Remarkably, in two of these five matches, the opening goal was scored within the first two minutes. Kevin De Bruyne found the net after just one minute and 34 seconds in April 2022, while Silva scored after one minute and 49 seconds last Tuesday.

Manchester City has emerged victorious in each of their last three home games against Real Madrid. All of these wins occurred under the management of Pep Guardiola in this competition, with scorelines of 2-1 in 2020, 4-3 in 2022, and 4-0 in 2023.

Notably, the only previous coach to achieve four consecutive home Champions League victories against Real Madrid is Ottmar Hitzfeld. He accomplished this feat while leading Bayern Munich between 2000 and 2002.

Wednesday’s match will mark the eighth time that Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti have faced each other in the Champions League, and the sixth time with both managers at the helm of their current clubs. The only pairs of managers to face each other more frequently in the competition are Alex Ferguson and Ottmar Hitzfeld, and Ancelotti and Jürgen Klopp, with nine encounters each.

Manchester City vs Real Madrid: Recent Form

Manchester City’s recent victory over Luton extended their impressive unbeaten streak at home to 41 games across all competitions, comprising 35 wins and six draws. This achievement leaves them just one game shy of matching their club-record streak of 42 matches, which was set between 1919 and 1921.

Soccer Football – Champions League – Quarter Final – First Leg – Real Madrid v Manchester City – Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain – April 9, 2024 Manchester City’s Phil Foden scores their second goal REUTERS/Violeta Santos Moura

Wednesday’s upcoming match will mark Manchester City’s 200th appearance in major European competition. Remarkably, their tally of 113 wins in these contests equals that of Real Madrid in their first 200 continental matches.

Should Manchester City emerge victorious in this milestone game, they will join an elite group of clubs with some of the highest numbers of wins in their first 200 European matches. Currently, Ajax leads the pack with 118 wins, followed closely by Juventus with 115. Manchester City would level with Liverpool at 114 victories.

On the other hand, Real Madrid boasts an impressive record of being unbeaten in 90 minutes in their last 37 games. This streak dates back to a 3-1 loss to Atlético Madrid in La Liga last September, with 27 wins in this period. Among their 10 draws during this run, Real Madrid has faced Atlético Madrid in extra time on two occasions, winning in the Supercopa de España and losing in the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Match Preview

Manchester City, the reigning UEFA Champions League champions, will aim to continue their dominance as they face off against Real Madrid, the Spanish giants, in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday.

This encounter marks the third consecutive season that City and Madrid have met in the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition. In the 2021-22 campaign, Los Blancos emerged victorious in a semi-final tie, while City claimed triumph en route to their championship win the following year.

In their previous four meetings, a total of 17 goals have been scored, averaging 4.3 per game (with seven for Real Madrid and ten for Manchester City). Another thrilling Champions League showdown awaits in the Spanish capital.

Reports suggest that Pep Guardiola’s squad is favored to defend their European crown in predictions, with Madrid ranking as the second-most likely team to go all the way.

The Premier League champions, Manchester City, comfortably advanced past Copenhagen in their two-legged last-16 tie, securing a 6-2 aggregate triumph with 3-1 victories in each leg. This success followed their impeccable performance in the group stage, where they won all six matches, showcasing their dominance in European football once again.

However, Real Madrid poses a formidable challenge, as they are one of only two teams, alongside Manchester City, whom Erling Haaland has faced more than once in the Champions League without scoring (two games against each). Despite registering seven shots and five shots on target against Carlo Ancelotti’s side, Haaland has yet to find the back of the net against them.

Haaland’s effectiveness in this encounter may hinge on the link-up play of Rodri, who leads the competition this season with 137 line-breaking passes, surpassing Madrid’s maestro Toni Kroos (128). Additionally, Phil Foden has been in exceptional attacking form, highlighted by his recent hat-trick against Aston Villa. Although he was rested for Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Crystal Palace, his contribution could be crucial in City’s quest for success against Real Madrid.

Kevin De Bruyne, the fellow midfield maestro, showcased his talent with two well-executed goals at Selhurst Park, while Erling Haaland continued to add to his scoring tally. Additionally, Rico Lewis, an unexpected name, found the back of the net for Manchester City.

However, Real Madrid boasts their own array of global superstars. Vinícius Júnior, in particular, has been a standout performer, directly contributing to more goals than any other player in the Champions League since the beginning of the 2021-22 campaign, with 27 involvements (14 goals, 13 assists). Moreover, Vinícius leads all players in the competition for completed dribbles (97) and progressive carries (373). His partnership with a familiar English face at Madrid has been formidable.

Former Manchester City target Jude Bellingham has been exceptional for Ancelotti’s side, either scoring (four) or assisting (four) in all six of his Champions League appearances. Only Sébastien Haller, playing for Ajax in 2021-22, has achieved a similar feat in his first seven games for a club in the competition (11 goals, two assists).

Bellingham and Vinícius’s outstanding form has been pivotal for Madrid, who won all six of their group-stage matches and narrowly edged past RB Leipzig 2-1 on aggregate in the last round of 16 clash. Ancelotti’s team news includes the return of Éder Militão to the lineup, although Dani Ceballos is doubtful, with long-term absentees Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba still sidelined.

As for Guardiola’s selection, Bernardo Silva was rested alongside Foden in the weekend victory over Palace, while first-choice goalkeeper Ederson returned to the bench after a period of absence. John Stones has been dealing with injury concerns, and Kyle Walker, Nathan Ake, and Josko Gvardiol are unlikely to feature in the upcoming match in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Head-to-Head

In their recent Champions League encounters, Real Madrid has only managed to win one out of their last six matches against Manchester City, drawing one and losing four. They have conceded an average of 1.7 goals per game in these encounters (a total of 17 goals conceded in 10 matches), which stands as their highest against any opponent they have faced five or more times in the competition.

This upcoming match will also feature a clash between the two managers with the most wins in Champions League history. Carlo Ancelotti boasts 113 victories, while Pep Guardiola trails just four wins behind.

In the three seasons where these two managers have faced off in the knockout stages, Ancelotti’s teams have progressed twice (in 2013-14 and 2021-22) but were eliminated in the semi-finals last season.

While Guardiola initially suffered defeats in his first two encounters with Ancelotti’s Madrid as Bayern Munich manager, he has since seen an improved record. Guardiola has lost just one of his last eight games against Ancelotti across all competitions, winning six and drawing one. Notably, all of these encounters occurred while Guardiola was in charge of Manchester City.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Recent Form

Manchester City is currently enjoying an impressive run of form in the Champions League, having won their last 10 consecutive matches. Only Bayern Munich has a longer streak in the competition, with 15 straight victories from September 2019 to November 2020.

Furthermore, Pep Guardiola’s team is on the second-longest unbeaten run in the Champions League, spanning 21 matches. The only team with a longer unbeaten streak is Manchester United, who went 25 matches unbeaten from September 2007 to May 2009. The last team to defeat Manchester City in the Champions League was Real Madrid in the semi-final return leg in May 2022, where they secured a 3-1 win after extra time.

On the other hand, Real Madrid has shown resilience in this season’s competition, having trailed for only 26 minutes, which is the fewest of any side. In contrast, Manchester City has been ahead for the most minutes in the competition this term, totaling 428 minutes.

Thibaut Courtois suffers another knee injury: Return postponed till new season

Thibaut Courtois has suffered a meniscus injury, and will be out for the remainder of the season. The Belgian was expected to return to the starting line-up after the Match international break fixtures, completing his recovery from an ACL injury that has kept him out all season. But now, it seems certain that he will not be available for any matches this season.

While it is certainly a huge loss for Madrid, they have been boosted by Andriy Lunin’s rise as the starting goalkeeper. And the Ukrainian will likely be playing regularly till the end of the season.

Los Blancos had also signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea on a straight loan deal in the summer to bolster their goalkeeper position. And after playing in the initial phase of the season, Kepa has been dropped to the bench, with Lunin given preference by Carlo Ancelotti.

The Ukrainian has been very impressive, and has helped Real Madrid remain at the top of the LaLiga table while also qualifying for the quarter finals of the Champions League.

The Belgian national team, however, will miss Thibaut Courtois for the Euros this summer. He is one of the most important members of their squad, and another goalkeeper will have to step up while he recovers from his latest setback.

Vinicius Jr racist abuse: Real Madrid file official complaint against Atletico Madrid

Real Madrid have launched an official complaint regarding the racist abuse against Vinicius Jr. The Spanish giants have filed their complaint with the Attorney General’s office and are seeking punishment for chants in games where they were not even involved.

Atletico Madrid fans were seen chanting racial abuses at the Brazilian ahead of their game against Inter Milan in the Champions League Round of 16. The winger has been targeted by away fans from across Spain, most notably Valencia. And even though the LaLiga has been putting in efforts to make Spanish football a hate-free space, the challenge to eradicate it altogether is still present.

Real Madrid file official complaint against Vinicius Jr racist chants

Here is the official statement released by Los Blancos on their social media accounts regarding the racial abuse matter:

“Real Madrid C. F. has filed a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office against the crimes of hatred and discrimination, for the racist and hateful insults directed against our player Vinicius Junior in the vicinity of the Olympic Stadium of Montjuic and the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid before the F matches. C. Barcelona-Naples and Atlético de Madrid-Inter Milan, of the Champions League.

Real Madrid asks the Prosecutor’s Office to request the security forces for the existing recordings in both locations in order to identify the perpetrators of such racist and hateful insults. Real Madrid condemns these violent attacks of racism, discrimination and hatred that have been taking place, unfortunately repeatedly, against our player Vinicius Junior.

Our club will continue to work in the defense of the values of football and sport, and will remain firm in its fight for zero tolerance in the face of episodes as disgusting as those that continue to occur in recent times”.
