What Happens to the Players?

There would be no requirement for the privately operated side to be based in Melbourne or even Victoria, leaving the door open for a new Melbourne rivalry in 2026–27 or potentially opening up a new market such as Canberra or Geelong. South Australia has also previously floated the idea of a second franchise. The BBL map is about to look very different.
What About Marvel Stadium and the Renegades’ India Plans?
The Renegades’ contract with Melbourne’s Docklands Marvel Stadium had lapsed at the end of 2025–26, and they had previously been mooted as one of the two teams selected to play the 2026–27 BBL season opener in Chennai. Those plans now hang in the balance.
With the sale yet to occur, it remains unclear where the relocated 10th BBL franchise will be located, but Channel 7 reports suggest the deal is done with Stars and Renegades staff already informed of the merger.
