The Indian government reportedly planning to scrap its ban on import of laptops, tablets, and other electronic gadgets rule. These limitations, set to take effect on November 1, 2023, were originally designed to encourage firms to increase local production of electronic goods.

Recent events, however, suggest that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is currently deliberating new regulations that will significantly expand and empower Indian electronics production, with a target year of 2030.

Prior to November 1, 2023, enterprises were first required to get an import license, with a cap on importing a maximum of 20 units per shipment. Major laptop manufacturers operating in India, including HP, Dell, ASUS, and Acer, expressed serious concerns about this unexpected implementation of limitations. The strict two-month timeframe proved to be a substantial obstacle in setting up the necessary infrastructure, despite the fact that these businesses declared their willingness to engage in local manufacturing.
