India’s biggest footballing night of the year is coming at a steep price. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is set to spend nearly ₹6 crore arranging a private charter flight to bring the Brazilian national team to Kolkata for their historic friendly against India on October 3.

Why a Charter Flight?

As part of an agreement between the AIFF and Brazil’s football federation (CBF), the arrangement isn’t optional — it’s contractual. Brazil, currently ranked fifth in the world, will be travelling across three continents in quick succession, playing two friendlies against Australia before touching down in Kolkata. To avoid jetlag affecting a squad featuring elite stars under head coach Carlo Ancelotti, the deal mandates a dedicated aircraft with at least 30 fully reclining business-class seats for the 90-member travelling party, including players and senior federation officials such as CBF president Samir Xaud.

VIP Treatment All the Way

The arrangements go beyond just the flight. Brazil’s squad will skip regular airport lounges and immigration queues entirely, with passport and immigration checks reportedly conducted directly inside the aircraft — a red-carpet welcome befitting one of football’s most storied national teams.

A Landmark Fixture for Indian Football

This marks a historic occasion for Indian football, as Brazil arrives on Indian soil for the very first time to face the Indian national football team. The high costs reflect just how significant the AIFF considers this moment — a chance to put Indian football on the global map by hosting one of the sport’s most iconic nations.

Why It Matters

While the price tag has raised eyebrows, the AIFF appears to view this as a worthwhile investment in visibility, fan engagement, and the growth of football culture in India, particularly in a football-obsessed city like Kolkata.
