  • MediaTek wants to invest in India to make the 5G FWA much cheaper

MediaTek wants to invest in India to make the 5G FWA much cheaper

MediaTek intends to collaborate with partners in order to lower the cost of FWA consumer premises equipment (CPE), such as routers. Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek India, highlighted the opportunity to bring broadband connectivity to rural areas lacking fibre connectivity. Jain further stressed the necessity of collaboration in resolving the cost issue and making 5G FWA a reality.

Despite Jain’s lack of specifics, MediaTek is known to collaborate with telecom operators and might potentially partner with Indian telcos on 5G FWA business.

5G fixed broadband is viewed as a critical use case for monetizing fifth-generation mobile networks. However, the cost of FWA CPE continues to be a considerable barrier.

According to Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal, the economics of FWA remain unappealing due to the high cost of the equipment.

Qualcomm, MediaTek’s competitor, has teamed with Reliance Jio for its 5G FWA solution, Jio AirFiber.

MediaTek also stated that the cost of 5G smartphones is one of the barriers that will be reduced as volume increases. With the introduction of 5G networks, the corporation claims to see an opportunity in the Internet of Things (IoT), particularly in regard to Industry 4.0 use cases.

5G development in India is accelerating. The Indian government declared in 2022 that spectrum in the 3.3-3.6 GHz and 26 GHz bands would be allocated for the implementation of 5G networks. This was followed by a spectrum auction in these bands in June 2022.

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea are the three major telecom providers in India that have won spectrum in the 5G auction. They are currently constructing their 5G networks.

In September 2022, Reliance Jio was the first operator in India to offer commercial 5G services. It has so far deployed its 5G network in 13 cities. In the following months, Airtel and Vodafone Idea are likely to launch their 5G services.

The government has set a goal of bringing 5G to 600 cities by 2025. It also intends to establish a 5G testbed at IIT Madras to aid in the development of indigenous 5G technology.

  • GSMA: APAC telecoms to invest $259bn in networks by 2030

GSMA: APAC telecoms to invest $259bn in networks by 2030

According to the GSMA’s ‘Mobile Economy Asia Pacific 2023’ report, telecom operators in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region are expected to invest $259 billion in networks between 2023 and 2030, with the majority of that money going towards fifth-generation or 5G deployments.

According to the GSMA’s analysis, 5G is predicted to boost the Asia Pacific economy by $133 billion in 2030, accounting for more than 13% of the overall economic impact of mobile, with the majority of the gains expected to materialise in the years leading up to 2030.

GSMA stated that by the end of 2030, there will be approximately 1.4 billion 5G connections in APAC, accounting for 41% of all mobile connections.

    GSMA
    GSMA

The GSMA has recognised Extended Reality (XR) as a key driver for 5G adoption, with augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) having the ability to bring in a new era of immersive consumer experiences. 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) services are also mentioned as a strategy to monetise 5G by providing additional revenue opportunities, particularly in areas with poor fixed broadband penetration.

Interestingly, according to the GSMA, mobile technologies and services would create slightly under 5% of Asia Pacific’s GDP in 2022, amounting to $810 billion in economic value added.

According to the report, telcos and the broader mobile ecosystem would directly employ around seven million people in Asia Pacific by 2022. Furthermore, the ecosystem’s economic activity generated around 4 million jobs in other sectors, suggesting that nearly 11 million jobs were directly or indirectly supported. According to the GSMA, the mobile sector contributed significantly to public sector funding, with over $90 billion earned through taxes on the sector in 2022.

  • Reliance Jio wants to cover the entire country in 5G before December 2023

Reliance Jio wants to cover the entire country in 5G before December 2023

Reliance Jio has deployed over 115,000 5G sites and approximately 690,000 5G cells across the country, claiming that its fifth-generation network rollout is well ahead of schedule. According to Reliance Industries Limited (RIL)’s investor presentation for QlFY24, Reliance Jio’s 5G network has reached over 90% of census towns. The telecom provider is now aiming to complete its 5G rollout by December 2023, rather than December 2023.

Reliance Jio and rival Bharti Ailtel began rolling out 5G networks in October 2022 and have accelerated the pace this year.

Indeed, the faster pace of 5G deployments has helped telecom equipment partners Nokia and Ericsson achieve a record second quarter (Q2) in India. Nokia India reported a 333% year-over-year increase in net sales in the second quarter, while Ericsson claimed a “leading market share” in the nation, citing good execution and record build-outs.

    Reliance Jio
    Reliance Jio

Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of Nokia, stated that India’s astonishing 355% growth cannot be sustained continuously. While investments will continue, he expects growth to slow in the second part of the year. Despite this, India is anticipated to have an extraordinary year in 2023. Lundmark, on the other hand, expects growth to level off in 2024.

He attributed some of their success to winning market share through a big relationship with Reliance Jio, which broke Samsung’s exclusivity in that sector. As they approach 2024, they expect the new normal or baseline for their business in India would be far higher than it was previously.

Meanwhile, Boije Ekholm, CEO of Ericsson, stated that the surge in India’s sales has helped counterbalance the projected weakening in other regions, particularly in North America, where the build-out pace has slowed and client inventory levels have been lowered.

According to the presentation, Reliance Jio’s fixed wireless access (FWA) AirFiber device will feature network RAN slicing and can be paired with a Wi-Fi 6 home gateway to give increased speed and coverage. Furthermore, Reliance Jio AirFiber will include a single sign-on technique for a more seamless first-time login experience to STBs and all apps. All 16 application builds already accessible on Fibre are now available on AirFiber, according to Reliance Jio.

  • 5G Smartphone Shipments Surpass 100 Million Milestone in India, Creating Record Growth

5G Smartphone Shipments Surpass 100 Million Milestone in India, Creating Record Growth

The month of May witnessed a significant milestone in India’s 5G smartphone market, as shipments surpassed 100 million units, setting a new record. The rapid pace of 5G roll-out in the country has contributed to this achievement. CyberMedia Research (CMR) has reported a remarkable growth of over 28 times in 5G smartphone shipments since its initial launch.

During May, 5G smartphones dominated 48% of the overall smartphone market, with Samsung emerging as the frontrunner in the 5G segment. Samsung was closely trailed by OnePlus and Vivo, further solidifying their presence in the competitive 5G market. These three brands collectively captured a substantial 60% market share in the 5G segment, as reported by Shipra Sinha, an analyst at CMR’s Industry Intelligence Group.

    5G Smartphone

    All About 5G Smartphone Shipments

With the expansion of 5G coverage across various regions in India, the 5G smartphone market is projected to grow by over 70% year-on-year by the end of this year. The growth trajectory has been impressive, with 5G shipments in India experiencing more than a 13-fold increase since their introduction in 2020.

In the year 2022 alone, nearly 100 new 5G smartphones were launched in the Indian market, reflecting the increasing focus on providing consumers with access to the latest connectivity technology.

However, the widespread adoption of 5G in India will depend on several factors, including the availability of affordable 5G smartphones in the market. A previous study conducted by CMR emphasized the importance of introducing 5G devices in the affordable smartphone segment, priced below ₹10,000.

Notably, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel initiated the roll-out of their 5G networks in October 2022 and have made substantial progress in expanding coverage across the country. Their efforts have played a significant role in bringing 5G connectivity to a larger population.

As India continues its journey towards widespread 5G adoption, the increasing shipment volumes and expanding network coverage indicate a promising future for the growth and utilization of 5G technology in the country.

  • Indo-US Tech Pact Paves the Way for Jio to Export its 5G Stack

Indo-US Tech Pact Paves the Way for Jio to Export its 5G Stack

According to informed sources, following the recent Indo-US tech agreements, Reliance Jio is exploring the possibility of exporting its indigenous 5G stack and radio technology. This step is anticipated to generate an extra source of revenue for the company.

    Jio

The agreements between India and the US cover various areas, including the establishment of secure and trusted telecommunications, resilient supply chains, global digital inclusion, and open RAN trials. These agreements provide an opportunity for local telecom solution providers like Jio to expand their presence in other countries.

All About the Jio Exporting 5G Stack

Given the global shift towards relying on trusted sources of equipment, Indian companies can also benefit from the global equipment replacement opportunity. Before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to the United States, Jio had provided the government with information about its proprietary 5G solutions and their potential contributions to the India-US partnership.

Jio has developed a comprehensive 5G solution, encompassing the 5G radio, a complete 5G core network, cloud infrastructure setup, and platforms for cloud-based operations. However, for its 5G rollout, Jio is currently relying on partners like Nokia and Ericsson, and has not yet deployed its own solutions on a large scale.

While Jio possesses the necessary resources to supply its own designed solutions to other countries, it must first test and deploy these solutions in India and obtain certification before commencing exports. Rakesh Bhatnagar, Director General of VoICE consortium and head of the government-appointed task force on new telecom equipment opportunities, highlighted the potential for domestic telecom solution firms, including equipment makers, to benefit from the India-US telecom partnership.

Reliance Industries subsidiary, Reliance Strategic Business Ventures, previously formed a joint venture with US-based Sanmina Corporation to manufacture 4G and 5G equipment for both global and domestic markets. The joint venture received an investment of ₹1,670 crore from the Reliance arm.
