From Sydney Studios to Thai Islands: Where Sam Raimi Shot ‘Send Help’

Sam Raimi’s survival thriller Send Help hits theaters January 30, 2026, bringing Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien’s desert island nightmare to life. But where did this intense two-character horror-comedy actually film? The answer spans three continents and combines Hollywood-scale studio work with authentic tropical danger.

Send Help Filming Locations

Sydney: The Production Powerhouse

Disney Studios Australia at Moore Park served as Send Help’s primary filming hub. The state-of-the-art facility hosted:

• Plane crash aftermath sets recreating the immediate disaster
• Confined shelter scenes capturing the claustrophobic tension between McAdams and O’Brien
• Underwater sequences using specialized studio tanks
• Green-screen environments for technically complex survival scenarios

Sydney’s choice as production base wasn’t accidental. Australia offers experienced crews, robust post-production infrastructure, attractive tax incentives, and the technical expertise needed for a demanding survival thriller. The city has become Hollywood’s go-to location for major international productions.

Thailand: Where Reality Bites

While studios provided safety and control, Thailand delivered raw authenticity. The production crew ventured to Thailand’s untouched coastlines to capture:

• Dense, unforgiving jungle vegetation
• Pristine, isolated beaches suggesting true remoteness
• Harsh coastal conditions that ground the survival story in realism

These real-world island locations create the film’s visceral atmosphere—the kind Raimi needed to make audiences feel the characters’ desperation. The contrast between controlled Sydney studios and wild Thai landscapes gives Send Help its immersive survival edge.

Los Angeles: The Final Piece

Select sequences were filmed in Los Angeles, though specific locations haven’t been disclosed. LA likely hosted post-production work, reshoots, or specific scenes requiring Hollywood-based resources.

Why These Locations Matter

Send Help blends psychological horror (Misery) with survival thriller (Cast Away), requiring both intimate character work and expansive environmental storytelling. Sydney’s studios allowed precise control over the actors’ deteriorating relationship, while Thailand’s natural chaos externalized their internal struggles.

Director Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) masterfully exploited both environments, using controlled spaces for character-driven horror and wild locations for visceral survival sequences.

The Story Behind the Locations

The film follows Linda Liddle (McAdams), a corporate employee mistreated by sexist boss Bradley Preston (O’Brien). After a plane crash strands them on a deserted island en route to Bangkok, survival becomes secondary to their escalating power struggle—a premise that required both technical precision and environmental authenticity.
