Surviving Hurricane Otis: Overview

The Real Storm Behind the Story

The film is built on Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 Pacific hurricane that hit Acapulco in October 2023. Forecasters expected a weaker storm, but it strengthened with shocking speed over warm waters and reached winds of about 165 mph. It was the first Pacific hurricane on record to make landfall at that intensity.

The damage was severe. Homes, hotels and the power grid were wrecked, communications went dark, and at least 52 people died. Losses were estimated at $12 to $16 billion, making it Mexico’s costliest weather disaster.

What’s the Plot?

Netflix’s official summary is simple. Wirpul and his half-brother fight to survive the hurricane, and their bond and courage turn despair into hope. Instead of a typical Hollywood disaster spectacle, the focus is on two people against an unstoppable force.

Why This One Feels Different?

Director Jorge Michel Grau, known for We Are What We Are, has said that nothing on this scale has been made in Mexican cinema before. According to his interview with El País, the team aimed for realism, tracking how the storm moved and unfolded as it hit. Expect tension that feels earned rather than manufactured.

Benny Emmanuel, a familiar face from several Netflix Originals, leads alongside Kristyan Ferrer of The Dead Girls. Their earlier work together in Sin Nombre could bring natural chemistry to the brotherhood at the film’s core.
