What’s the Story This Season?
Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) have finally settled into family life with Princess and Tyler — until Kat (Charlotte Riley), the kids’ biological mother, shows up unannounced at their doorstep. Season 5 follows the chaos and complicated emotions that come with navigating a new normal none of them signed up for.

Who’s Back (and New)
Smith and Spall return as executive producers alongside their lead roles, joined by Charlotte Riley, Scarlett Rayner, and Cooper Turner reprising their parts. The ensemble also brings in Darren Boyd, Siân Brooke, Celia Imrie, Phil Davis, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Colin Morgan for the new season.
A Show Built on Real Stakes
Since premiering in 2020, Trying has followed Nikki and Jason’s journey through adoption and parenthood with warmth rather than melodrama — a tone that’s earned it comparisons to other quietly moving British comedies exploring found family themes. Each season has also featured an original soundtrack from a different artist; this year it’s Ivor Novello Award-winner Orla Gartland, following past contributors like Guy Garvey and Maisie Peters.
