Top 5 football managers with the highest UCL final appearances in history

UEFA Champions League (UCL), which was previously known as European Cup, is the biggest European club competition. Just like every team and player, every manager also dreams to win this UCL trophy.

In 66 years of UCL history, while a total of 22 different teams have won the trophies, the number of different managers to win this European Cup is 43.

Carlo Ancelotti

Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti is jointly holding the record of winning most UCL trophies as he has already won three such trophies. Only the former English manager Bob Paisley and French manager Zinedine Zidane are in the same position on this list. But only Ancelotti is among them to win those three UCL trophies for two different teams.

After the Italian club AC Milan won the 2003 UCL final and the 2007 UCL final under the management of Ancelotti, the Spanish giants Real Madrid recorded their La Decima under his management in the 2014 UCL final.

Overall, Ancelotti have reached a record of total of five UCL finals. Apart from his three UCL trophies, while AC Milan also finished as the runners-up in the 2005 UCL final, Real Madrid are currently waiting for the 2022 UCL final, where they will face the English club Liverpool.

Sir Alex Ferguson

In European football history, the former Scottish manager Sir Alex Ferguson was one of the very popular and successful managers. While the English Premier League club Manchester United widely dominated under his 27-year-long management tenure, Ferguson’s Red Devils also experienced four UCL finals.

Manchester United appeared in 1999, 2008, 2009 and 2011 UCL finals. Out of those four times, the Red Devils won the UCL trophies in the 1999 and 2008 editions.

Miguel Munoz

Former Spanish coach Miguel Munoz is another successful name on the list of reaching most European Cup finals as a manager. Munoz was the first man to win European Cups both as a player and manager.

Under his management, the Spanish club Real Madrid was advanced to four European Cup finals (1960, 1962, 1964 and 1966). While the Madrid based club recorded their fifth successive European title after the 1960 European cup final, they won their next such final in the 1966 edition.

Jurgen Klopp

German manager Jurgen Klopp is one of the high-class football managers of this generation. Unsurprisingly, Klopp has reached four UCL finals, including the forthcoming 2022 UCL final.

Under his management, German club Borussia Dortmund experienced their second-ever UCL final in the 2013 edition. However, their German arch-rivals Bayern Munich beat them in that final by 2-1.

Then the German manager took the charge of the English club Liverpool. Under him, they already played two consecutive UCL finals (2018 and 2019), including winning in the 2019 edition. Now, his present Liverpool side is going to be ready to participate in the 2022 UCL final against Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid.

Marcelo Lippi

Former Italian coach Marcelo Lippi was another successful manager. He also experienced four UCL finals, all for his Italian club Juventus.

Under Lippi’s management, Juventus appeared in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2003 UCL finals respectively. But his Juventus only managed to win the 1996 UCL final. While his team experienced three consecutive UCL finals, he was the first UCL manager to lose three finals.
