How One Woman’s Study-Abroad Dream Got Easier with Duolingo English Test (DET)

Some of the biggest life decisions come with the smallest, most annoying roadblocks. For content creator Aanchal Agrawal, that roadblock was an English proficiency test — until it wasn’t. Her story is now becoming a bigger example of how digital-first testing is quietly reshaping who gets to study abroad, and when.

At 30, Aanchal chose to pursue a second master’s degree overseas, navigating her admissions process with the Duolingo English Test (DET) — a digital-first English proficiency test now trusted by thousands of universities worldwide.

Duolingo English Test (DET) : Overview

A Second Master’s, A Different Kind of Challenge

Aanchal’s decision to study abroad at 30 wasn’t just about academics — it was about proving that international education isn’t limited to a specific age or life stage. But her journey came with a very real hurdle: applying during the peak of COVID-19, when uncertainty and logistical chaos made every part of the admissions process harder than usual.

Traditional English proficiency tests, often requiring in-person test centers and rigid scheduling, added extra friction to an already stressful process. The Duolingo English Test changed that equation entirely — letting her take the exam from home, on her own schedule, with results delivered in under two days.

Why Accessible Testing Matters More Than Ever

Aanchal’s experience reflects a broader shift happening across Indian learners pursuing international education. As more students explore studying abroad at different stages of life — not just straight out of college — flexible, accessible testing options are becoming essential rather than optional.

The DET’s online format removes major logistical barriers: no travel to test centers, no long waiting periods for results, and no unnecessary complexity standing between a student and their application deadline. For many, that convenience translates directly into more time and energy spent on what actually matters — building a strong application.

From Applicant to DETCON Speaker

In a full-circle moment, Aanchal was later invited to DETCON, a global gathering of students, educators, and higher education leaders, where she shared her journey with aspiring international students. Reflecting on the experience, she said her time in Pittsburgh felt like the perfect close to a story that began with a difficult, uncertain testing process years earlier.

She’s also been vocal about encouraging others — especially women — to consider studying abroad, calling it one of the best decisions of her life and one that opened her world in ways she hadn’t expected.

The Bigger Takeaway

Stories like Aanchal’s highlight a quiet but important shift in how international education is becoming more attainable for a wider range of learners. By reducing the friction around English proficiency testing, platforms like DET are helping reframe studying abroad as an achievable goal — regardless of a student’s age, background, or where they’re starting from.
