Millions of Indians tucked away ₹2,000 notes after the Reserve Bank of India pulled them from circulation back in 2023. Three years on, the RBI has issued a fresh reminder: if that pink note is still sitting in your drawer, it hasn’t lost its value — but the way you cash it in has changed.

The Current Situation

According to the RBI, the total value of ₹2000 notes in circulation has declined from ₹3.56 lakh crore to just ₹5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026. That means 98.47% of the notes that were in circulation when the withdrawal was announced on May 19, 2023, have already been returned to the banking system. Only a small fraction remains with the public.

How to Exchange or Deposit ₹2,000 Note

Bank branches stopped accepting these notes back in 2023, so today there are only two real options: walk into one of the 19 designated RBI Issue Offices spread across major cities, or post the notes from any India Post branch addressed to an RBI Issue Office for direct credit to your bank account. Both routes require valid KYC-compliant documentation.

Why It Still Matters

Even with the vast majority of notes already back in the system, the RBI continues nudging the last holdouts, reiterating that these notes are not worthless — they simply need to go through the right channel now.
