South Korean developer Shift Up has revealed that Stellar Blade has surpassed 3 million units sold globally across all platforms. Notably, 1 million of those sales came from the PC version, achieved within just three days of its release.

The studio also noted a milestone shared earlier: Stellar Blade is now the Sony-published single-player game with the most concurrent players on Steam. The game has also been popular on Steam, where 94% of 15,600 reviews are positive.

Stellar Blade Tops 3 Million Sales Globally; Shift Up CEO Hints at 2027 Launch for Story-Rich Sequel

On a related note, Shift Up CEO Kim Hyung-tae provided some hints in an interview with Korean website This Is Game, talking about a possible sequel, Stellar Blade 2. He even hoped to release it in 2027, but nothing is cemented as of right now. Kim clarified that although they first started working on DLC, each individual aspect of the project grew to become so much bigger that a full sequel was in order. However, due to the PC version requiring all available resources, development on the new title hasn’t progressed much.

Currently, the studio is in an R&D phase, exploring how to realize a next-gen vision. While a 2027 release is the goal, Kim acknowledged the tight timeline and said they will do their best, promising a high-quality game.

Considering the first game came out in April of 2024 on PlayStation 5, a sequel in 2027 is an ambitious-sounding target to have — it’s often taken AAA games four years or longer to release. Kim also responded to complaints about the game’s story by acknowledging that the story was a weak element.

Early plans, he said, were to include more storytelling aspects, such as in-story reasons why characters would change into different costumes. But the high cost of production led them to eliminate much of the supplementary cutscenes.

He also added that Korea is short in terms of production infrastructure and manpower for narrative games, something that adds to the issue. Although they’re wary of tampering with the current game’s story-driven approach, Kim sounds certain that a sequel could build upon it for a more robust and narrative-focused experience.
